Field Tillage Question

I have often seen a field left in stubble to winter with just a strip tilled around the perimeter with maybe a disc or cultivator, maybe 1 or 2 rounds is all....is this done for weed control or something else? Always wondered. Minnesota

Probably planned to burn it but the conditions we?re never right . Around here you have to file for a permit and then take a class and then you have to call the day of the burn they set a prescribed day and see if the weather meets the required conditions . You have to start the processes in the spring to be ready to burn by fall

Could be , but it is never only the headlands or all of the headlands, just a thin strip all the way around. I see it here a lot. Fire break ? , I don't think so as it is usually soybean stubble and it is winter so wet and snow..

Here’s another theory, though all of the other theories are correct too. Let’s say the field entrance is on the south end. Farmer goes into the field on the south end and works the south end to break up compaction. He makes an odd number of passes so he finishes up on the other end of the end rows. Then he tills along the fence on his way to the north end to work up that end. When he is done he comes back down the other side of the field and ends up where he started at the field entrance, working up the soil where he turned around while working the south end. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. LOL.

I usually till a pass or two around the field. We do it for the weeds that seem to migrate in from the edges. The head lands always get deep ripped for compaction issues.

Getting to be more common here lately to leave soybean fields untilled,, except for the outside rows, which are tilled to break up compaction where the combine turned, trucks traveled, etc. This is on heavy soil. Leaving light soil soybean stubble untilled has been common longer...corn stubble as well.

Compition on the end rows and to beat back the sod type weeds that want to creep into a field from the sides.
