Totally OT cat scratch

Hey guys, I know how some feel about off topic posts so I apologize. I have an outside cat that I discovered a cut about an inch or so long on him. It looks pretty fresh to me. It doesn't seem like it is real deep. Around the cut it's like his hair was shaved off. Kind of weird. What should I do? Will it heal on its own? Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Not a vet!!! If it is not through the 3rd layer of skin, and not bleeding at this point, I would put a minimum dab of something like Neosporin antibiotic on it and keep an eye on it. Jim

Is it a tom? This is the time of year when they get their dander up with another tom. The other day when I was walking to the barn there was a terrible cat fight going on in there. When I opened the door the cats were gone but there was yellow hair laying all over the floor. When I fed the cats a yellow tom came out of the darkness looking like he had been through a butcher shop. Then another much bigger tom showed up walking stiff legged and wide eyed but untouched. The funny part was they were peacefully eating side by side at the cat dish.

Another possibility is maybe he climbed up into an engine compartment of something and didn't get out in time when the vehicle was started, and got scraped with the belt or fan.
Don't ask how I know.

Myself I'd let it heal. Cats are resilient. I had two barn cats tore up pretty good by a racoon this winter, deep gashs. Coming on spring now they both look no worse for the wear.

do You have a dog that likes to play with them --or fight with them --My dog thinks there something to play with -- pull hard nuf and the hair and skin pull off -- the skin heals over but not the hair -- stupid cats just lay there and take -- all have claws too - I figure if they are that stupid they got it coming -- real pussycats for sure --- Roy

If you have a good vet and if you have a very understanding doctor. You need a script for Amoxicillin liquid. It is pink. Keep refrigerated. This is an antibiotic that is safe for cats. A lot if stuff is NOT Safe. Just rub a little on the wound or put a little in the animal's food. Keep the others away till it eats. Or government is screwing everything up. Lots of stuff you could buy at the store are gone.

If it doesn't heal on its own, best to have a vet you trust take a look. Two scenarios--both with two different cats of mine:

Cat one injured her paw somehow, was limping. Brought her to a vet I'd never used. They sutured it, no anaesthetic, cat was in howling pain. She recovered fine, no thanks to the efforts of the clinic. It was a minor gash and in retrospect I should have given it some time.

Cat two had a gash near its tail. I waited to see if it would heal. Became infected and vet had to do an extensive procedure to get her sewn back together. This was a few years ago and she's fine.

Cats do have a remarkable ability to heal from injuries, but you should monitor yours and see if it needs a visit to the vet. Try to find a clinic you trust--not one that's just going to perform a procedure because they happen to have a cat in front of them.

I would be afraid to do that to one of my cats. He is still has a little farrell cat left in him. If he took off with that thing clamped to his neck, I probably would never see him again, and that is in the house. That looks like a good idea though. I have seen a vet clamp a horse nose in the same way. The horse stops moving around, and just stands there. Stan
