John Deere G tire size questions

Will need tires at some point on a late Deere G What size do you guys recommend? I am leaning to 13.6/38. Not used for pulling at shows just a restoration and do some farm work.

I think the bulk of them originally would have had 12s on them wouldn't they? The old 12s,that would be the new 13.6s. Guessing they'd have had 12s,the A would have 11s and the Bs 10s the way the Oliver 88,77 and 66s would have. I know the factory would have installed whatever was ordered, but most likely those would be the sizes that were "standard" sizes wouldn't they?

I think you are correct on most of that. Don't want to go overboard but to small a tire and its not much good either. What do you run on your 77 88'sfor farm work? leave pulling out of it.

The ones I have seen around here have 14.9 x 38's. They look good on there. I think 13.6's look kind of puny on a tractor that size.

Randy I am sure that the JD "G" I had did not come from the factory with 15.5 x 38 tires on it. The fact is in the 1960s and 1970s, 15.5 x 38 tires where easy to find used as many tractor used that size then.

I've got 13.6s on my 77. It had 11s on it when I got it. The 66 has 11.2s on it,which would be the old 10s. Dad's first 66 had 10s on it originally. I remember going to TSC in Grand Rapids and getting a new pair of 11.2s for that one. That was the first time I ever saw those new sizes. I believe uncle Claude's 88 had 12s. The first 88 that I bought with a mounted picker on it had 13s. Those would have been a 14.9 in the new sizes. They looked awful big to me at the time.

I saw a real early unstyled B sell today. That one had 8 36s on it. The old Firestone continuous tread. Those would be hard to replace today.

Jocco I put several sets of tires on G's. I do believe they were 13.6x38's. They certainly looked correct on them.

Orignally 12-30 that became a 13.6x38 at same time as the 15.5 became avaible and the 15.5 if a couple of inches wider than the 13.6 but it is alsy a sraction of an inch shorter than the 13.6 but so close you dont even noticing it when running both as main and dual. The 14.9 is what was the 13 and is a decent size larger and will also work OK, just speed tractor up just a bit. Never had a G but late B new 10 and replaced with 12.4 and late A 12 replaced with 13.6 but the earlier B that had high speed gearing and smaller engine came on 10" and that is what orignal was and still on it when I got rid of it. With that model you would not want to go larger but newer B & A should have been the 1 size larger from factory.

13.6x38 on a 12" rim would be pretty much standard issue. 14.9x38 would be a slight upgrade but would still fit the 12" rim. the 15.5x38 had not yet been introduced when the G was built, and the 15.5 would need a 14" rim.
