Having trouble getting a John Deere D to start using the electric starter. The tractor was pull started pretty easily. The mag was professionally rebuilt and it started fine until it set up over the winter. I have cleaned the points and all other contact surfaces. What is the copper coated metal washer in the picture for. If it is where it is supposed to be it is rather loose.

What does it look like when it fires at the plug. If you have good spark it may be fuel related. I don't know what the washer is for. My Indian motorcycle uses a Edison Splitdorf mag. Probably the same company. Stan
 
Parts catalog calls it a "disc, safety gap".

In general, a "safety gap" in a mag is a defense mechanism that provides a path to ground for the high-tension spark if a sparkplug wire is disconnected/falls off. Avoids wrecking the coil or carbon-tracking the rotor or cap.

ASSUME it doesn't have to fit tightly to do it's job. Back side of the rotor must be bare, allowing spark to jump from the backside of the "tab" on the rotor to the washer if there's an issue with one of the plug wires, including
"wire fell off".
