JD 4430 at auction - Interesting oil change interval

Looked at a John Deere 4430 at a consignment auction today. On the oil filter was written something like 4/9/2004 (2004 was right for sure) with something like 5270 hours with a weather proof marker. Well, this is 2018 and the tractor had about 900 hours more on the hour meter than that written on the filter. I didn't pull the dip stick. I wouldn't mind buying the tractor but the preventive maintenance might have been questionable. I understand the owner could have drained the oil and just kept using the same filter, but who knows.

If he's a JOHN DEERE guy he used John deere oil it's just that good! It wasn't time to change yet!

I know a guy that thinks his tractors can go an extra 500hrs on oil changes because Deere oil is just that good. He use it in his lawn mower (Briggs 12hp) and changed it every 100 hrs. I sold him a lot of mower engines!

Overall the tractor doesn't look that bad. At some point it had a new cab kit installed. Tires are at 70%. Metal is pretty darn good. Good seat. Draw bar hole looks good. Looks like the right rear axle housing has been replaced as it has newer paint and a yellow stamping saying "Made in the USA". The oil filter date and hours is a real concern.

John Deere says 500 hours on newer engines with there oil and filter and if the engine has an oil related failure they will pay for the damages . At one point John Deere was offering a better warranty on fiat equipment if you ran John Deere oil instead of fiat brand probably trying to buy customers I?m sure .

Not familiar with John Deere. But are you sure you looked at engine oil filter. I have seen some hydraulic systems or auxiliary control circuits that have a 1000 hour change interval on other equipment.

if it starts and runs good and if the price was close i would get it thinking it will neeed motor work one day and hoping someone wrote 2004 on the filter to get the price down.

I looked at a Ford once that may have had the date and hours marked on it, but the paint on the filter was long since gone as was most of the metal covering, as it was rusted right through on the top. and oil oozed out of it while running. At least the guy selling it for the estate wasn't trying to hide anything.

I know a number of guys who have tractors that old and WILL NOT change oil. The reason is the seals. One guy borrowed a tractor from a friend, and as a favor did an oil change. About two hours later, the seals began to leak and by day's end the motor was locked up. Prior to that the tractor would use a couple of quarts a week and my friend would add used oil instead of new.
If you buy it, figure an engine over haul into your price planning.

Went and looked at a neighbour's 2t2 one time all the filters on it were dated ten years prior fuel and oil filters had 2000 t hours on em buy what was scratched into the filters the tractor was the guys main tractor pulled a hesston 4900 big baler and did 3 crops of hay on 500 acres a year . doesn't make it right but some people do it and get away with it.
