good evening all, want to show you a tool I bought about 20 years ago off the snap-on truck, for breaking nuts to get them off when i'm working on something I don't want to use an impact or socket and big ratchet on. in this case i'm taking the rotten manifold with a big hole in it of the block and I don't want to try using an impact and wrecking the manifold studs or the hold down brackets. after 57 years of being burnt on there. as you can see in the pics you just put the nutcracker on the nut, tighten until your hear a snap, the nut splits open, take the tool off and take the broken nut off with your fingers. if you guys remember jon f's funny for the day about "any 20 minute job is just one broken bolt from being a 3 day job" here's the tool to take care of that.

as you can see no damage to the stud or hold down clamp
 
One trick I learned with those. You want to cook the nut first to
remove all of the temper. They work pretty good. Don't try to crack a
tempered nut. Kinda messed up the tool.
 
I work on a lot of commercial kitchen equipment. Not always but
sometimes you run into nuts that have become tempered from the hot
cool cycles. They get so hard it will chew up the end of a Phillips
screw driver as if you touched them to a grind stone. I had a stuck
nut just two nights ago and used a plumbers torch to get it off. When
I put the unit back together installed new nuts. Everything went right
on. The picture shows a manifold and those nuts can get really hard.
Give it a shot some time. After your nut cools down i just bet your
cracker might work better. Just a thought.
 
I have one similar to that I?ll see if I can find it and
post pic I had two sizes at one time they came as a
set . I?ve never heated a nut before splitting one
either but it might not be a bad idea on a super hard
nut
