Update on the calf

The little calf project is going well. He's been off the bottle for a while now, been eating up the yard.

How much should we be feeding him? Currently giving some calf starter pellets and hay, and he eats all the grass he wants all day. I don't know if there's a too much or too little? He seems happy and healthy and is growing fast.

Calves can be fed free choice, they won't over eat and founder like a grown animal, I would add a little whole shelled corn to raise the energy level of the ration. When the grass comes on this spring and summer you will get the cheap growth.

Grain should be fed to him at the rate of 1 1/2 percent body weight per day. I start my 300 pound calves on 4 pounds per day when they come to the farm, and go up from there. Hay and grass is free choice all they want.
