RT5000: Tire and Transmission Issues

Good morning.

After my father in law passed away we inherited his Honda RT5000.

It does not have the original size tires on it therefore the transmission is hard to engage at times. This is according to an auto mechanic friend of mine

The current size tires on them are:

Front 1555/80 R12
Rear P185/64 R14

I came across an advertisement for the original size turf tires which are:

Fronts: 7x12x20
Rears: 8x14x24

My friend said I may tear the transmission up if I continue to run improper size tires.

My question is for anyone who has experience with the RT5000s. If I put original size tires on do you think will it help with the transmission issue?

We are assessing the worth of the tractor since all it can do is pull a trailer and push snow and see if it worth the investment.

Thanks for your time and have a blessed day.

1. From what I've heard honda doesn't have the best support for older machines, and the RT5000 was sold from ;86 to '89, that MAY affect value.

2. NOT sure waht you mean by "It does not have the original size tires on it therefore the transmission is hard to engage at times." I could understand if there was a 4 X 4 engagement or disengagement issue, but not so much with a "transmission engagement issue".

3. The tire sizes you posted make no sense, either typos or a mix of metric and non metric. An "8x14x24" tire would be half as big as the tractor!

Although I have no experience with the RT5000 I do remember when they were new and I thought it was
a pretty neat little tractor. Kind of ahead of its time with 4WD and 4WS combined in a compact
tractor. I think I still have a brochure for it in my file cabinet.

Here's a link that has some good information about replacement tire sizes. The author makes it
sound like original sized tires are about impossible to find and this was written over ten years
ago. Probably nothing has improved over time in this matter.

Honda has not been very responsive

From what I understand since the tractor is in constant 4 wheel drive the tire sizes need to be exactly what Honda originally placed on them or it messes up the transmission.

I just copied and pasted the tire sizes from the place that says it has the original size turf tires. They would cost almost $1000.00 and I am not sure it is worth it.

Thanks
