Windows Ten

Please excuse the rant.
I am very annoyed with Micro$oft Windows Ten Automatic Update.
Every time I'm busy with a program,
Update pops up wanting to impose their latest fad and restart.
I think if they knew how to write code to start with, updates would
be few and far between.

That's been one of the biggest issue on the Windows Insider program. We all have been saying we need more control over when the updates get done. Some want it at like 3am, others 3pm. Or they could, if they need to force it because the computer was off, during startup or shut down.

Might try going to settings , then to update and security, then change active hours. Default is 8 to 5, I changed mine to 8 to 11 pm. That seemed top help some.

I'm on Win 7, but still have the same problem. Our internet speed varies, as all we can get is cellular. Once we hit a certain mark, internet speed slows way down.

On one of the PC's, it downloads updates automatically, which makes any kind of browsing impossible when at the slower speed. Then, rather than just waiting for when the PC will be shut down next, instead it will pop up a window giving about 30 seconds warning before it reboots, or I can delay the reboot up to 4 hours. Can't tell you how many times that stupid auto-update has totally messed up whatever I was working on at the time.

Keep trying to get "brave enough" to switch to Ubuntu or some other form of Linux.

I had the first version of Windows 10 and with that - it was easy to turn off automatic updating by saying I have a "metered" Internet connection. Then - like an idiot - I manually updated. Now that my Windows 10 has the "latest and the greatest" - I cannot turn off automatic update without going into near DOS mode and working with the registry.

Kcm, you can turn updates off in Win7,
left side of toolbar click on the multi colored globe and type "update" click on windows update then settings.

You can change the "active hours" of Windows 10 so it will do the
updates when you're not using it, assuming you leave it powered on.

You can set your internet connection to "metered" also.
Doing that will stop it from automatically installing "feature updates".
It will still install critical and security updates automatically, but
there are less of them and they are often smaller in size.

Easiest way to find active hours is to type the word active in the
search box by the start button. One option that shows up will say
"Change active hours". When you open that up, there is a link
that says change active hours that you can use to set the hours.

A little lower on the same page is a link to advanced options.
There you can pause updates for up to 35 days. This can be
useful if you have a metered plan and you don't want to use up
your limit for the month but it will download all the updates at
the end of that time and can't be paused again until it does.

had windows 10 since it first came out & never see a pop-up wanting to update or anything else from windows, yet it updates automatically.

Thanks Dune. That PC is the wife's. Used to have updates turned off, but wanted her system to update automatically. Well, she still calls me in there every time it's about to reboot, so will probably turn it off again.

(quoted from post at 20:03:40 03/09/18) Setting to "metered connection" no so easy with the lasted version of 10.
Here's how to set up a Metered Connection in Windows 10.

1.Open the start menu and select Settings.
2.Click the Network and Internet link.
3.Select Wi-Fi from the sidebar.
4.Click the Manage known network link under your existing connection.
5.Choose the network you're currently using from the list of available ones.

"Setting to "metered connection" no so easy with the lasted version of 10."

Manage network connections, edit the properties of the connection.

That is the reason I have not updated to Windows 10 even thought I hate the windows 8.1 I have. Microsoft has gotten their last money from me. I no longer use their office program after my bought and paid for version was made to not work on their "new" systems. I will not pay a rental for a "new/improved" program that I can't operate because they changed it. So I allow ZERO updates. I need nothing to change on this computer. I have a good anti-virus program that has stopped all that stuff for 4 years now. I want absolutely zero anything further from Microsoft.

When this computer quits I will look at Apple or a computer with a non Microsoft operating system. I will never give Microsoft another DIME of my money period. Let Gates starve for all I care. The company has turned to bullying and money grubbing corporation.

yep, my beloved Win7 died last fall, we had 8 then 10 at work and I knew I wasn't having that junk at home, so I bit the bullet and bought an Apple, takes a bit of learning, but love it so far!

You've got them on the run now.

If you stay signed-out of iCloud you'll get no update notifications, etc.

You might want to turn off Siri too.

I'm still running 10.9 Mavericks & it's very stable.

I too had my fill of Microsoft constant updates, expensive trips to the local geeks, and continuing problems. I finally bit the bullet and bought an IMac. Expensive? Yes, very. Problems? Well, let's see. . . I've had it since 2008, and I finally had to wash the keyboard. I use it 3 or more hours per day, every day.
