Tried The Snowblower

Decided to try mounting the McKee 6 foot snowblower on the "new" JD 2140. It took a while and a few adjustments as it differs from the Cockshutt 40 three point. But eventually I was making the snow fly. I'm not familiar with JD 3 point hitch but it seems really hard to find neutral. I push the lever all the way forward and the blower settles to the ground. But try to lift it just a bit off the ground and it wants to lift all the way up. No detent at all. Plus I don't think there is any down pressure at all. Guess I need to get the manual out and study it.

Most 3 points do not have down force, at least any I have been around. Set your top link so the auger digs into the snow a bit vs riding
up if that makes sense.

Have never been around that model JD, but
what you describe with the 3 pt control is
what my Masseys do in draft control mode.

Well no JD three point has down force. On the right side of the top of the transmission there is a short lever with 3-4 notches. The letters L,LD, D will be stamped by those notches.

The letters stand for:
L= load/draft control
LD= load control with more depth control
D= depth control with no draft at all. Also called position control.

Yours sounds like it is in load/draft control. They will lift all the way up with little movement on the control lever. Set it in Depth/position control and the hitch will respond directly with the control lever. Move the level a little and the hitch moves a little.

This lever is easy to hit with your foot getting on and off with rubber boots on.

I was wondering if that small lever low at the right of the seat had some effect. I think I tried most of them but could not see much difference. I'll try it again when I have more time to experiment. And also read the operators manual.

I have a new (to me) 2240 and the rockshaft would act like you're describing. I have the manual and would suggest you buy one too. There are several adjustments to make the rockshaft work as it should. They are all described in the manual. Adjustments should be made to the load control negative stop screw, load control adjustment (most likely the problem), load control lever adjustment, and a couple others. Makes a huge difference if they are properly adjusted. Not hard to do but really need the manual. The cam follower adjusting screw is accessed through the hydraulic filler so I always tape the socket to the wrench to be double sure it don't come off.

Thanks, I have the manuals and just need to get down to studying them while I'm on the tractor. I think its mostly a matter of getting used to a new system. My old three point hitch on the Cockshutt 40 just worked off the main hydraulic control with double acting cylinder. Neutral in the centre. Push one way for down, the opposite for up. Lever always returned to neutral.

I have an IH 300U with fast hitch. The lower arms are lifted by a 2 way cylinder, so, effectively it has down pressure. I use that to dismount tires off rims. Works great.
