Since Dave H mentioned 1918 and the flu. This is my grandfather in France in 1918. He used to say that his company lost more guys to the flu on the ship over than they lost in France. He was in a transportation company. There were not a lot of people in 1918 who had experience driving before induction.

I wonder what caliber that pistol is he's wearing. I guess he used it to put the motor out of misery when it konked out in whatever vehicle he was driving.

Colt 1911 in .45ACP. Only NCO and up were allowed side arms. Family history says that Pa was the Secretary of Wars driver when he was in France.

An old WW1 vet neighbor of mine was in France in the war when his fiancé here in the states died of the flu. He was so hurt he never considered a close relationship with a woman again.
