American billionaire Paul Allen has
done it again and found the Lexington
76 years after she sank at the Battle
of the Coral Sea.
Allen is the guy who found the USS
Indianapolis last August and Japanese
super battleship Musashi a year ago.

My Uncle retired off the "new" Lex in the early 1960's...he mentioned serving with some of the men who survived the first one when she went down in the Coral Sea....

That's amazing. Two miles down. I remember when I took off once with the anchor on my FIL's ski boat hanging over the side. Looked back and saw it bounce twice and then the rope broke. 100' from shore in 4' of water. I looked for an hour and never found it. Had to buy him a new anchor and, as I remember, he was a little cranky about the whole incident. Not sure I have much future in finding ships 2 miles under the sea.

Many say bringing an old tractor back to life is expensive.
They obviously pale in comparison to his hobby.
And, he won't have to store it/them! ;)
At least we know where it is now for historical purposes.

A guy on another board said the same thing about its condition. Said he wondered when they were going to start flights ops again.

"Surprisingly good shape."

Why is it not encrusted with the usual sea life and rust?

If they could get it floating, some BP Blaster would have it running again!

Very impressive. Also very impressive is the person Paul Allen. Coming from the Silicon Valley, residents of such known for their particular views on things, his comments upon finding the Lexington (as posted therein) are surely honorable and very much American. Thanks for sharing.

Too bad things did not go differently during damage control operations. Also, as I understand it the Lexington was torpedoed by out own vessels to avoid falling into enemy hands. If there appeared to be a better chance of securing her she might have survived Coral Sea.

wow,
you can see the rifleing in the barrel still.

2 miles down probably helping to preserve it.
