A brand-new diesel CJ for $15K?

The catch is it's not street-legal.

Indian automaker Mahindra has announced they will be producing an off-road vehicle called the "Roxor" in Auburn Hills, MI. It's based on the Mahindra Thar, which in turn is more-or-less a Jeep CJ-5. If they are able to sell these for $15K, it's going to be serious competition for the high-end ATV market. 62 horsepower diesel, 5 speed manual transmission.

That's pretty neat.....the only down side I can see is the impact on the ground. I can run around on my place with the side by side in wet conditions and hardly see any tracks. Some of the upscale side by sides can run over 20k.

Well, let's not fool ourselves, it might look like a Jeep but it ain't no Jeep. I didn't realize it but Mahindra make a number of other off road and even on-road vehicles and has for some time. Not a highly-rated brand with reliability, parts availability, etc. Do some Googling on Mahindra Reliability and Parts, etc. A fair number of negative reviews. You can buy a good Jeep YJ for $3000 and an aftermarket for parts that will blow you away, nothing comes close to what you can buy for those. Mind you, not brand new but you know what you're buying (sort of).

Very cool that they're "reproducing" them. If they turn out reliable and I had an extra 15k around would love to have one, lol. Will be interesting to see how it turns out. I'd take a diesel "jeep" over a side by side any day.

For now I have to put up with the old gasser, lol.

Mahindra started making CJ Jeeps in 1954. I suspect if they make them now they will be every bit as good if not better then the "Italian" Jeeps sold in the USA. I'd rather have an Indian CJ Jeep and then an Italian Jeep sold in the USA and pretending to be a USA brand.

There were diesel CJ Jeeps sold in the US in 60s. They had Perkins diesels and were poor sellers. I doubt they will do better now. Time will tell.

When I left the state of New York 3 years ago - due to the extra taxes - diesel was often a full dollar more per gallon then gas. That takes away a lot of the advantage of a diesel. When I came to Michigan -diesel often cost the same or less then gas. NOW - Michigan has copied NY and put their own special penalty on diesel fuel.

Oh well - except for heavy towing - diesel becomes less and less worth having.

Here is my "diesel" 4WD yard-buggy and woods-machine. 1985 4WD Isuzu with a 2.2 IDI diesel.
