The original subject was "Land clearing ?".

I have six acres of land, covered with trees, mainly smaller diameter trees, I am renting a Cat 312 to remove six acres of trees, I am not planning on removing the dirt on the roots, will let the rain take care of that, nor am I concerned about stacking them for now. I would like to know how long it will take me to clear six acres of trees. I have experience with the mini excavators and with back hoes.

How proficient are you as an operator? I have had a dozer or a track loader for about 35 years and just operate occasionally. First I had a Caterpillar D 7 and now have a JD 450 C track loader. I hire more custom work gone than I do with my machine because a highly skilled operator can accomplish about twice as much as I can. Unless you are a good operator the job will cost you far more than it will cost to hire a custom operator. If you enjoy the sport,go ahead and rent one for a couple days and see how you get along. It is costly entertainment. If you are a good operator, the only saving is an operator's wages, You also have to pay delivery and the cast of hauling it back to the rental place. An excavator is faster and you lpse less dirt.

An awful lot will depend on how big and what type of tree ! Black walnut trees are about the hardest I have yet to remove due to the big tap root.

Where I live it's a mistake to use heavy equipment to clear land. Once cleared it can take 15-20 years to recover from the heavy equipment. It strips off what little topsoil there is and nothing grows there for years. I have to clear the land with a chain saw and the most I can do with machinery is use a tractor with a front loader and push the debris up into a pile and burn it. I have to be very careful not to scrape the ground with the bucket.

Stephen, it sounds like somebody made a big mistake in how they cleared some land. Standard practice is to cut stumps in two with an excavator mounted shear to release the dirt, then drop them on the ground from a good height, a time or two, then either windrow them or drop them into the tub. Another method that used to be used a lot is a crawler with a root rake which leaves the soil behind.

A lot of sasaphras? trees, some red oaks, maples, birch, etc. I will be spraying the land to kill off growth, running an old heavy brush hog over the ground, then plowing/disc the ground for grass. Experience, again, have operated the small excavators and backhoes. old case 580 and newer Cat 420's.

Is there a forestry mower head on that Cat 312?

If not, rent a Bobcat type machine equipped with a forestry mower in front.

Or hire out the same service for the job at hand, not per hour.
