I have a small piece of property that is called an Irregular Quadrilateral--none of the four side are parallel. The four sides are as follows. 50 ft.x 280 ft.x 300 ft.x 335 ft
With an acre at 43,560 sq. ft. What do I have here??????

I have found you can get real close by averaging the two distances on the opposite sides. So assuming that the 50 ft. and 300 ft. sides are opposite you would add them 50 + 300 = 350 then 350/2 = 175 for that dimension. then the 280 ft. plus 335 ft. = 615 615/2 = 307.5 307.5 x 175 =53812.50 53812.5/435660=1.235 acres.

This will be very close. Calculus can get it even closer but I am not doing that in a post. LOL

If you don't know any angles, measure one of the diagonals. You can then calculate the area inside the two triangles. An angle or diagonal should be included in your legal description.

Without knowing at least one of the corner angles, you can't calculate it. But we can get a rough estimate.

Let's fudge the dimensions to make it symmetrical: 50 x 308 x 280 x 308. (308 is the average of 280 and 335.)

We'll assume the "height" of this quadrilateral is a little shorter than the length of its sides, so make it 300.

Now we can take out a rectangular slice out of the middle: 50 x 300 = 15,000.

Put the remaining pieces together to form a triangle 308 tall with a base of 230. The area of a triangle is 1/2 base x height = .5 x 230 x 300 = 34,500.

Add them up: 15,000 + 34,500 = 49,500

49,500 / 43,560 = 1.1 acre.

"Put the remaining pieces together to form a triangle 308 tall with a base of 230" should have read "Put the remaining pieces together to form a triangle [b:654c4848f0]300[/b:654c4848f0] tall with a base of 230". The calculations are unchanged.

Thats How I Do It JD . And Yes ,Calculus Would be Closer if You are Working On Launching to the moon and Ya dont Wanna miss It and over or under shoot it ! LOL. I was reading Down all the workable posts and yes they are correct, but i already had the answer using the barnyard math method you simply described , except i used 308 x175 , I Want to Error on the Hi side , that way i Charge enough for Materials , Or if get Enuf Spray and Seed , fertilizer our There

Look it up on 'Acme planimeter'. If you know where the corners are, you place a point there and scribe a line around the area. Look at the bottom of the screen, and it will ell you how big the area is. And, it is very accurate.

Hello lenray,

You tax map is the law! It is also pretty much on the money. Get the right info at the tax office. My town has it on line free download of the whole town,

Guido.

There is an app for the iPhone called measure map lite. I think it’s free. Can measure area easily from anywhere
