Here are some pics from the Ag Mechanics show at the San Antonio Stock Show yesterday. A huge building full of things from fire pits to heavy equipment trailers, porch swings to restored tractors. Lots of hard working proud students, and a couple of characters that frequent this site, M-MTexas and Texas Cowboy, doing some judging.

Thanks for posting WJY. Ag mechanics was one of my favorite things as an ag teacher/ FFA advisor. It was one of the best ways I had to inspire young people and get them to believe they could succeed. In 38 years of working with young people, I found that if I could get a kid believe in their own ability they could achieve a lot. This had to be balanced so they weren't over confident but I found if a person believes they cant do anything it can become a self fulfilling prophecy . I could go around the shop and find something a kid had a knack for. Once I did that we could build on that talent and develop his or her abilities. Toward the end of my career when I was our counties vocational director several of the state "experts" didn't care much for me because I told them often that a good work ethic and pride in a job well done was at least as important as academics and test scores. I found if a young person is inspired they WILL be successful. Sorry didn't mean to rant but it means a lot to me . Thanks again for posting it.

Agree having spent 35 years teaching Ag mechanics. The last years, sadly, spent justifying programs to school boards, state departments etc. The MN dept of Ed dropped it's financial support of vocational ag programs (actually all secondary vocational programs, welding, carpentry etc etc) by the mid 90s and then we begin losing programs until today, they are extremely rare in high schools and under pressure in the post high school tech schools. The usual rant by administrators, low class sizes, large space requirements, broken eqpt all over, noisy, very expensive in eqpt supplies etc compared to program teaching Spanish or something similar. Don't want to carry on but just vent I guess. I'm still in touch with many kids and parents from way back in the 70s.......Try that with your math intructor

My Dad was an Ag/FFA teacher/advisor for 36 years. I learned much more than how to raise an animal or a crop. Both of my kids were involved when they were iin school.

I'm so sorry to hear that oldproudvet. Makes me wonder who the idiots in charge think are going to do the work in this country. Maybe that's why they are pushing foreign language lol. I will put the results of a good vocational program up against the results of ANYONES sports program.

lee little, wjytexas & oldproudvet, Thank y'all for inspiring our youth. I was blessed to have a strong FFA chapter in school with three great Advisors. One of them was the biggest/best influence in my life outside of my parents. His youngest son and I were best friends from 1st grade. Mr. Anderson always said whether you think you can or think you can't you are correct, YES, it's a self-fulfilling statement. I'm the youngest of 4 boys and the only one to not go to college and I am blessed with a great job in the oil refining business and make way more than my brothers.

I also want to comment on the MF 180 in the pictures, all of the tractors look great but that one is my favorite!

When I graduated high school in 1969, I wasn't disciplined enough for college. I went to vocational school and took a semester each of welding, auto body, and auto mechanics, things I was interested in, and I learned to drive a truck on the farm. I have never been unable to find a job, usually a good one. I drove a truck for 25 years, mostly pulling a tank. Now allegedly semi retired, I rebuild tractors and trucks, farm a little, and repair the neighbors junk, excuse me, equipment.

Well the weather was not bad as forecast , now wished we had gone, like Logan said the 180 is nice. My first diesel was a 1967 180. Wish I had never sold it.

Nice, nice, nice. My son did a senior exit project on a JD 2510. For the final day at High School they had to present to the community and judges. He had the same table setup with pictures and replaced parts to talk about. That brought back memories. We were very proud of him.

When I took the route I drive now I went to five different schools every other week for welding gas and supplies, and a couple more that just called when they needed something. Now I deliver to one school regularly, everybody else is twice a year, once to deliver bottles and once in the spring to pick them up. I have one high school that the Ag teacher retired, and I have been back once in the last five years.
