Question about three point hydraulics

I read often about someone putting their lift in 'constant pumping'. What does that mean? I thought mine was pumping any time the engine is running and the clutch is engaged. I'm ready to be educated. Thanks. TDF

I think the Massey 135 IIRC had that setting at the top, beyond the full up position. It would make the tractor labor noticeably and you could feel the lift trying to raise even though it was already up. Seems like it may have raised it a little higher. Never knew the purpose for it unless it was to help lift something that would otherwise be too heavy, or to keep it from settling.

MF tractors with constant pumping position is used to turn back on for auxiliary valve use. Three point internal linkage turns the pump off when the lift arms are full up. Constant pumping over rides this position to turn the pump back on again. It's NEVER be used during three point use only.

Ray, no, it was for auxiliary hydraulics.

Under normal conditions, when the 3 point arms were all the way up, the hydraulic pump would dump pressure to relieve the pump and prevent over lifting of the arms.

On the older MF's it would sometimes break the cylinder or even the upper housing if too much pressure were applied when the arms were all the way up.

You got lucky!
