OT, toll cameras...

My son and I have owned a 1984 Blazer for a dozen or more years, and it's never left the state of ND in those years. Last October, he mangled the front in a deer collision, and it has been parked on my property in North Dakota even since.

Florida DOT claims they caught it on a toll camera on December 5th, obviously in Florida.

Sent a small, poor quality b&w photo of the back of a minivan or little crossover SUV that looks nothing like a full-size 1984 Blazer and are demanding a small "ransom" WTH NEXT???

Any of you got any similar stories?

How the heck would they have your name and address? Oh yah I know it's easy, but that's the "luck of the draw" for sure!

Send them a letter with a picture of the wrecked Blazer. Since it's out of state they can't do anything about it unless they pull you over in Florida.

Got an official notice from some department in NY City. They claimed my farm plated dump truck was spewing some toxic goo in their fine city. The plate number they referenced did match mine. Figuring I'd better not just ignore it, I took it to my lawyer. He said take it to my state assemblyman. He straightened them out.

I would be careful that it's not a scam. What evidence do they give you? A license plate number? That's about the only way they could get your address. Did he lose the front plate in the collision with the deer? Someone may have picked it up and is using it. Check the Blazer to make sure both plates are still there. If they ran a plate they can surely see that the license does not belong on a mini van or crossover. You mention the photo is poor quality, can you make out the license number. It sounds to be similar to the IRS scam. Check the documents they sent you and compared telephone numbers and addresses with know legitimate numbers. If legitimate numbers then call and talk to someone. It should be easily reconciled with your evidence.

Florida got me on a toll camera about 4 years ago going to the Flywheeler's show. I was in the wrong lane. Was a very good picture. Total fee wasn't 3 or 4 dollars.

Also a nice letter thanking me for spending time in Florida.

Friend of mine has a F450 truck that was bought new and made into a spray truck then. It is a factory job with 48" ag. tires on it. He got a ticket in the mail from Cedar Rapids saying he was caught speeding on I-380 in that truck. HE called them and they could careless what it was they wanted "their" money. Here in Iowa if you have any outstanding tickets of any kind you can not renew your personal license or vehicle tags. He had to get a lawyer to get it straightened out.

Don't bet on that. There are too many states with reciprocal laws. Can get your insurance or license impounded.

I got a letter like that once, about my wife's Chrysler minivan plates.
They "read" those plates on a late model Chevy sedan in Oklahoma City one day when the van was parked in the carport.
I told them I'd pay the fine if and when they could capture and impound my stolen Chevy, so I could come pick it up.
They reconsidered and decided they had misread the plate on the Chevy.
Darn the bad luck.

My wife received a similar notice from Florida DOT last summer. It was a poor quality photo that was supposed to the plate on her 1996 Saturn. We sold that car over 2 1/2 years ago and the plate in question is still in our possesion. I?m sure the car was scrapped. We signed the title over when we sold the car. How do they get your address when the registration has not been renwed for over 2 years? I called the number on the notice and was instructed to call back in 2 weeks, which I did. On the second call they indicated the car had been caught 2 more times on toll cameras. We have not heard anything for 3 or 4 months. Hope it went away. Ron

Hire FlOldFord and his Yankee Attorney phriend to straighten things out!
Worked for me

PS: Tell them kruser sent you

Sounds like they guess a lot, throw something at the wall and see if it sticks.
I wonder of the ANPR cameras work any better ?

Not pay the ticket because you live out of state. I used that line of thinking when I got a parking ticket(ran out of time on meter) in Rehobeth Delaware. I am not coming back here, screw you I thought. After several attempts to collect from me.Rehobeth turned my ticket over to a collection agency who threatened to turn my nonpayment over to the credit reporting agencies. I settled real quick. That little parking ticket got expensive!!

If they claim to have read your license plate, ask them for a copy of their license plate photo.

Same toll story. I called em told him what I had for a vehicle with that plate number. He pulled up picture on computer. Said plate was read wrong in picture. Tossed ticket, end of story.

Got a parking ticket for a car that I took to the crusher 7 years ago. Simple phone call straighten it out. You can get your license plates renewed if you have any outstanding tickets, so when this kind of stuff happens you can?t just ignore it.

I once got a parking ticket in the mail that said (my license plate number) registered Mustang was in violation. I called up the issuing police department (in the city where I've never been) and asked them to verify my registration on their computer. It came up as the Ford Van that I actually own. They obviously could not mistake one for another and dropped the ticket.
I also once got a notice for a landing fee due from an airport in Canada. I mailed them back that I've never flown outside of the USA. I don't think they wanted to take me to international court.

About 20 years ago I got a parking ticket from Richmond VA that my vehicle had been parked overtime in Downtime Richmond, turns out I was at work that day and time.So I called and explained the situation and had time cards to prove where I was, they took it off no problem.About 6 months later they busted a meter maid that was randomly writing down license numbers for parking tickets instead of actually checking vehicles.

Yeah, we had a little gospel music band that played in churches and assisted living centers, and one of the guys got a similar summons from some far-away place that he'd never been, for a vehicle that probably wouldn't even make it there. It was good entertainment - I'd introduce him as a fugitive from justice - the crowd loved it.

Few years ago sold my truck with the expired plates on. They expired the day he picked it up so were no longer good to me so told him to put them in garbage. We just have stickers when renued so the plate is still in the system for the address. I got a letter from New Jersy that I have never been close to with a picture of that plate on a car. Went to sherifs office and told them that the plate had been left on truck when I sold it and had been expire already a couple of years when I got that letter. Did not take him long to get it cleared up for me but have no idea who stole that expired plate here in Ohio.

Had a similar issue with a parking ticket in Milwaukee... from a licence plate that had been discarded and not registered in my name for over 3 years. I'm guessing it went in the scrap bin, and someone got hold of it at the metal recycler?

Anyway, it took several phone calls to the City of Milwaukee and DOT. Ended up filing a stolen plate report with local police to get it resolved. Seriously consider getting local law enforcement involved, they may be able to help you document that you truck has been in a ND snowdrift all winter. They helped me!

A small town north of me had those cameras installed,,after a few months the local people had a Revolt,,raised all kinds of noise,,ended up getting the mayor fired and the cameras gone. The way they work is a company leases the cameras to a town or city, they processes all the paper work and deal with the maintenance of the cameras then they receive a large portion of the fines,, the town gets a small amount of cash with no investment,,so the more the camera people can fine the more they make,,it is a real racket..

my uncle once got a ticket from crook county il for parking or running a stop sign the car they claimed was my uncle's
wasn't even the same make as his

Years ago I got a notice from California for an outstanding parking ticket in their state. Car in question had never been out of the state of Michigan and was in fact parked in front of my daughter's work place in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the time of the ticket. Several calls to city in California before they straightened it out. Had to send a copy of registration to them. About 6 months later we went through the same routine with them on that ticket. They were like a dog with a bone - wouldn't give up. Haven't heard from them since, so think they finally gave up.
