Way OT WW2 scrapbook

I was cleaning up a little in the attic and found a scrapbook made by my uncle Bobby during ww2. It was just newspaper clippings and pictures glued into a notebook. It really got my attention for awhile. There was 6 brothers and he was the only one to young to serve. Ironically he was the only one who died during the war. He was in a car wreck and was hit by a convoy of army trucks. He was 14. I didn't come along until over 30 years later and never heard much about him. I guess looking through this scrapbook got me thinking about him. I can imagine he was probably envious of his older brothers and wishing he was a couple years older so he could join them. I got to thinking about how hard it would have been on my dad and the rest of his brothers. They were off fighting a war and could have been killed any number of times only to find out this 14 year old boy was killed when he was supposed to be safe at home.

Wow, I will add another thank you. Have always been a history buff. My dads father was an X ray tech durring WW 1. He actually met General Pershing. My dad had flat feet, glasses, and was working on a farm so they wouldn't even think of taking him. He wanted to be in the Sea Bees.

What a shame on your uncle.very miraculous that all of the other brothers went to war and made it home alive though. Nice pictures and great family heirloom to have one of his personal possessions

A note to add. YOu should write up a little story with everything you know about him and this book. Also do a little research through the local paper or library too and add it to this book in a big envelope. You will find out more and hopefully someone else may someday find it of interest.

I have seen the story about the B-17 with the big gash from being hit by a German fighter. The tail end of the plane was flexing quite a bit and they di not think they would make it back, they used parachute lines to get the tailgunner back up into the fuselage. Very interesting story and amazingly they landed it safely.

Thank you for sharing that. I wish my dad and his brothers would have spoken about their WW2 experiences. I do understand why they didn't. Uncle John was on a destroyer sunk by a kamakazie, uncle Keith was a belly gunner on a bomber and flew his missions over Germany, uncle Don was with Patton and had a couple of tanks blown out from him, I believe dad was a sniper. They all came home and lived productive lives.

My Dad had a cousin who served as a radio-gunner crewman on a B25 in Italy. He completed 50 missions and could have come home, but he volanteered to stay. On his 51st mission his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Entire crew was lost.

Thanks for sharing. Stuff like that is always interesting to me.

That said, I can't help but looking at that second picture and think how something like that happening in our 'kinder, gentler' military environment would have both of those guys in the brig, if for no other reason than selling off enemy souvenirs simply isn't PC.

My thoughts exactly. That's one reason I picked that picture because it sure wouldn't be allowed today. There are several articles in this scrapbook I just picked a few that seemed unique. I have a photo album of my dad's ww2 pictures. I don't think some of those pictures would be allowed. He was one of the first on the scene and has several pictures of the concentration camps.

Not to steel your post, but I recall one of the worst PC moments I recall from the first Gulf War was folks being outraged when solders painted grafiti on bombs to be delivered to Sadam.

For those that don't know it...
