Messages with ’ as an apostrophe ????

Anyone else notice that sometimes, the occasional post has ’ showing up as an apostrophe in the word? For example, you might see don’t for don't, or we’ve for we've, and so on. Just curious as to why that happens in some posts and not in others? Maybe it's just showing up on my laptop possibly and not other peoples computers?

Been asked on Site Comments Forum. Something to do with posting from a smart phone I think.

That is something from using a phone making it to show up. It is very agrivating as you can hardly figure out what they are saying at times. It comes up all the time on my desk top computor. Criss has addressed that down in site comments. I just do not understand all his terms.

I don't even have one. What's that say about me? That I should have,or that I'm smart enough to get by without one? LOL

It is all about the differences between Smart phones and a computer. I do not use anything that is touch screen. They do not work well with my fingers. I also do not need the Internet 24x7 so my "stupid" flip phone work fine for me. My wife says I am not smart enough for "Smartphone" . LOL I tend to agree.

I see both at different times, it depends on who is posting and from what device. I cut and pasted the weird symbol for my post so people
know what I was referring to.

Yes, but modest. :)

I don't know, randy. I have one I got many years ago. It was smart then and I used it endlessly. But more and more it is getting obsolete and now it is just a phone again. A dumb phone. I have a tablet now, but no one calls it a smart tablet. Much better than a smart phone.

The problem with characters not appearing correctly is due to the forum software being too old to comprehend.
And most likely too old to be supported (updated) with fixes from the original software code writers for free.

Some day Classic view will crash and be gone forever.
Hopefully Modern view will not crash at the same time.

The son and daughter in law got the wife a tablet for Christmas. She hardly uses it. She said it's way slower than her Google Chrome Book. Said about the only thing she can think it might be good for is taking pictures. Said they'll already be in it and she won't have to download them from the camera.

I have an old TracFone flip phone. Does everything I need it to do which is tell time. At church on Sunday morning I turn it off if I remember, then long about Thurs. I remember to turn it back on because it's my watch and I am wondering if it's time for lunch yet. Once in a while it rings, and before I can get it out of my pocket and open it up whoever called has given up. As for texting it has 3 ot 4 letters on each number, and every time I try that I wind up with the wrong letter a lot. It does know how to tell the time, and even resets for daylight savings time by itself, which is a good thing because if I had to do it 1/2 of the year I would be an hour behind or ahead. This summer I'm going to see if it knows what time zone I'm in. Got to make a trip to Wi. to grandsons graduation.

I did not even realize it was an apostrophe that the ’ was replacing. It is disgusting and makes for very hard reading. It has been around since before smartphones. I always thought it was related to Windows origin.

Maybe now that I know I can train my mind to see it as an apostrophe.

It is my understanding that Chris wrote the code for Classic. I look at it like it is and old family tractor. I like it just fine like it is and don't want to see any changes.

We've got one of those. I think to get it to switch time zones, you have to turn it off and back on again.

I have the same thing happen at times. I just assumed it is a difference in the HTML (hypertext markup language). There are five versions. If someone authors a Webpage with one version and your browser uses another - there are anomalies at times with what you see on the screen.

Hi, I notice that funny (like emogee) when someone writes the symbol for degrees when giving weather. It does trip you up a bit when reading. Ed Will Oliver BC

See it all the time from certain 3 or 4 posters. I try to ignore it but it does grate on me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I figured it's just a keyboard/programming difference

IIRC this has to do with different versions of unicode

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_encoding

If the incoming was different to what your computer was using you would get funnies on screen.

You used to be able to set which one your computer used. Probably still can but I haven't played in that bin for a long time

So...now I have to worry about this as well as my spelling?

That could be agrivating (aggravating).

I see only one of those symbols on the keyboard on my computor (computer); the straight up and down one.

I was not even allowed to post this reply using the original title with the symbols contained in it!

Thats Just Modern Bullshytunable to releive itself, so it decides to confuse us good common sense thinkers with its idiocy.. we got enuf to worry about , the yuppishytts that put that program on the computer need to walk into the ocean as far as they can go

That and when doing fractions they too show up funny on some sites so I just use decimals. I'd think that most of us, once understanding what's happening can figure out the intent of the sender.

(quoted from post at 16:26:19 02/07/18) If that happens half the posters will be gone forever as well.

Old dogs will have to learn some new tricks.
A clip from the bottom of this forum screen indicates the software being used is at least 12 or 13 years old.
That is ancient in software life years.
If this were a dog, you would be expecting it to die within the next very few years.

What on Earth is this all about? Does anyone have a keyboard with both a slanted mark and a straight mark?
' don't '. I only have one such key?

And that's modern view! The software for 18th century classic was probably chiseled into stone tablets--or written on parchment with a quill pen! :D
