Looking through pictures today reminded me of a story of my dad.The farm in NJ was very secluded, until housing developments sprouted all around it.I remember I was 16,driving the pickup and my dad was the passenger. We were driving down our long private gravel lane when we noticed two ladies walking down the lane. They had come from the housing developement ,,nicely prim and proper ladies taking a stroll. My dad said to me ,pull next to them and stop. He had the window rolled down,He said to them,,who are you? They calmly replied ,we live up in the new houses,we are just taking a walk.He quickly replied,,,how would you like it if I come walk in your F/// ing back yard??? They turned a bit red,,and turned around and headed home. Its a true story,I Remember it,,and the look on the ladies faces like it was yesterday.

Larry That Was not Really very nice ,,.I Dont liked housing developments , and i dont like citiots living in the country,Either ,,. in 2002 I ran And Got elected to be county Commissioner here in harrison Co , IND, One Of my issues was FARMLAND PRESERVATION ,,. We have been Successful , Mostly in creating awareness , Patience and respect for all of us to Co exist,.. I have served 16 yrs on county boards and zoning bds,.we see a lot,. however we try to get along.

My dad was a city kid, grew up in "the hood" if there was such a place back in the 20's and into the 30's. By the time he lived in the "burbs" and had a family, he was a travelling salesman peddling his wares out in the boonies our of the trunk of his car. He'd leave Monday morning and come home Thursday evening and before anything else happened, he'd go into a rant about the half dozen farm trucks and their drivers that he encountered over the past 4 days. What he had to say wasn't pleasant, maybe a bit stronger than what your dear old dad had to say to those ladies.

Our county commissioners "JUST LOVE" housing developments. Those developments pay a lot more in property taxes than a field of corn or beans. And they never seem to have enough money. As far as property rights, they need to be respected, which means you don't go for a walk on someone else's property. gobble

I say GOOD for him. I have had new "neighbors" try to kick me out of our own fields for shooting woodchucks!

Hmmmm, Well your Dad could well have been one good man , I sure don't know......but do you think he would have said something like that to 2 pretty healthy good sized men walking down your lane?

A couple of years ago my younger brother found a couple standing in a field of soybean stubble. He drove in and they ask him if they could help him. He said he came in to ask them the same thing. They told him they were looking at buying the land. He told them that it wasn't for sale. They insisted that it was, and showed him the flyer and map. He told them that they were on the wrong place, but they insisted he didn't know what he was talking about, and wanted to know why it was any of his business. They didn't stay around too long after they found out he was one of the owners, and that we didn't take too kindly to smart trespassers driving in our fields!

That is what Barney Fife was talking about when he said "you've got to nip it in the bud!"

By the way, while you may not think what Larry's dad said was nice, I think your comment about the pallbearers was uncalled for, especially when it was made about someone you never met.

Yeah, folks like to say they bought a place out in the country. The problem is that some of them think they bought the whole country!

I'm a Commissioner in a county that doesn't like housing developments. The east 1/3 of the county is in a water conservation district, and our zoning regulations limit residences to 3 per quarter section. The western half of the county is level land, pivot irrigated from the Oglalla aquifer, and the land is considered too valuable as farm ground to waste on residential developments.

It makes for some interesting stories. You wouldn't believe how people try to circumvent our regulations. And, one situation is still in litigation. A poor guy paid $480,000 for 80 acres of non-tillable land that assessed for $217,000. He figured to divide it into 8 ten acre plots and sell 6 of them to finance houses on the other two plots. He then found out the other 80 acres that made up that quarter section already had the entire quarter section maxed out on houses. So, he paid $480,000 for 80 acres he can't do anything with. He then sued the county for "preventing him from making use of his property".

Our zoning regulations went into effect in 2007, and he bought the land in 2016. I've read the brief our County Attorney filed in the county's defense, and the case will obviously be thrown out. After all, the onus is on any real estate purchaser to do his homework and determine beforehand that he will actually be able to use the land for his intended purpose.

Keeps it interesting.

My dad was a good man, hard worker, good provider...

But he had the filthiest mouth of anyone I have ever met!

Worse was, he didn't care who was hearing him! He was not a big man, and I remember hearing him get called down for it a few times. But he would not back down, seems if anyone complained, he just piled in on deeper. Never seen it come to blows, but the possibility certainly was there!

I would have told them they were welcomed to walk up my lane if they wore a minimum of clothing and baked me a pie every day. Of course if I would tell them that today I would be receiving a certified letter from their lawyer.

I don't have to deal with those city types so maybe I would have a more profound opinion if I did have to deal with them every day.

I?ve always been told and believe to this day that a foul mouth is the sign of very little education and a poor upbringing.
My father never cursed nor do I or most of the people I associate with on a daily basis.

Over in the City a developer bought three houses on Broadway, (an acre will run a million.)Between 24th and 20th street it is residential,he let the houses run down and tore them down. Now he is having a fit because the city told him to pound sand when he wanted to put up a restraint. I knew he could not build there, and I live in a different state!

I can understand how your Dad felt, and farming on the edge of town , I get lots of folks walking on my farm. I try to be a friendly kind of guy, and I try to just make folks clear that I don't really mind them walking along the edge of a field, but no motorized vehicles. Nothing for me to gain in making an enemy , but winning a Ally by doing nothing.... priceless .

I just read last week that cussing is a sign of intelligence....Hmmmmm

When I bought my land 15 years ago, I was out preparing a building sight and someone pulled onto my property and started throwing trash out of their truck into a grove of trees...I ran up to them and asked them what the Heel they were doing. They said 'Oh we always dump our stuff here. I asked if I should call the sheriff, then stood there while they loaded everything back up.

Hey Larry , you got enough problems to think about without me making you feel bad. Please know that was not my intent. No doubt You Are telling it like you seen and heard it . my folks and me were not always nice, but we strived to be , and yrs later we mite laugh about the times we failed ..i Too , can get crusty like that if enough things go wrong and i have a bad run in a weeks time.... i can tell you story after story.,where my dad or myself have flunked the test and came out swinging. looking back at most of them , enough time has passed to make the story like yours to be humorous,. i honestly cant think of anything that i am ashamed of. But i am certain I Have not fully Examined my Consoiunce .. LOL. Ionce had a new set of jumper cables that were stolen from my truck , After looking all over with my son , and realizing they were stolen , I fussed in exasperation after having my head behind the seat in the double cab truck , "I hope The son-of-b--ch that took them HAS TO USE THEM A Bunch"..Right then i looked up to see the Country Parson standing next to my son.LOL. At That point i explained my position a little sheepishly as he grinned and shook his head.

You Are So Right Bruce. i too have a lot of hunters and fishers on my place ,those same folks are cheerful helping hands during hay season. i do make rules,,such as , NO 4 Wheelers, Respect All Crops and equipment . no trash . i ask that they park at the barn or the pond . since 1990 , so far, so good ,and they report anything that don't seem rite that i need to double check . about the wildest thing i ever found was some girls underwear along the pondbank.

Larry,
Too funny. Great minds think similarly.

At times when we have had trespassers on our land...
I always tell my husband, "C'mon, let's go over to THEIR PLACE - and hang out on THEIR patio, maybe sit in THEIR hot tub for a spell, then grill up some burgers on THEIR grill. I'm sure THEY won't mind a bit."

He thinks it'd be pretty funny. Hee-hee

Your county Commissioners are trying to catch a leaving train that is piking up speed being fueled by their own stupidity and your INCREaSING TAXES .The so called taxpaying Housing units will cost you ROADS , schools , emergency services , fire dept.ect . And moral social issues that good country folks would rather not have to deal with . YOU CANNOT unring a bell ..I f Your COunty has Good fertile class 1-4 farmland being subdivided , they better WAKE UP ,And If They DONT ?.VOTE THEM OUT and Replace Them if You Have To Be The One to HOLD THE OFFICE.

Funny story, interesting to think that people had the same ignorant attitude toward farm people and disrespect for their land even 50 years ago. Like it was a public park or something. lol

I agree, I try to be courteous because I have too much equipment and vehicles that could be easily vandalized. One thing the missus taught me that I found amazing at first, was to treat everyone with respect and dignity no matter their station in life. It is amazing how friendly and helpful people become if you just acknowledge them, thank them for the service they do ect. Next time you see someone cleaning a public bathroom compliment them and thank them and see the smile you receive.

There is a lady here in town that must be in her late 80s who emigrated from Hungary many years ago. When she was in her twenties and thirties she used to enjoy a nude stroll down a back road or lane on a warm spring day.

Olegent is right. Farm land does not produce much tax money but housing subdivisions suck up way more than they bring in.

A few months back I heard some professor getting interviewed on the radio, guy claimed a little cussing was a sign of imagination and creativity.

That story is very funny Larry. People used to park down the road from our house at night when I was a kid. They usually left trash in the ditch or threw it in our field. My dad would go out and shoot an old 12 gauge up in the air. We would then listen for the BB's to rain down on the car. Didn't take long for them to leave.

Yeah, well, if somebody talked to my wife or daughter or mother like that no matter where they are, and I found out about it I'd be hunting him up and be having a "little more understanding" about it......

When I was at my friends house one time in the 50's he showed me his battery powered tape recorder. I had never seen one before and I convinced him to let me take it home so I could record my family without them knowing about it. Come supper time I had the recorder in a hidden place and while we were eating supper I think I encouraged talking a little bit and my step-dad obliged by spicing up his normal salty talk and when we had finished I pulled out the recorder and played back the conversation and my mom jumped all over him for his foul language in front of me and my brother. Actually it was the way he normally talked but it sounded worse on the recording!
