Have prices really gone up that much?

I bought a new Ogden disc mower caddy with the hydraulic lift arms in 2012. Gave $2800 for it. Had been sitting on the lot for a couple years, maybe I got a deal.

Guy heard me talking about it, (he hates hooking up his disc mower as much as I did) came and looked at mine, went to price one...$4800!

Have prices gone up that much? I know it's been 6 years, but 70% ?!?

Looking around online, that seems to be about right...wow.

Nothing surprises me anymore if ya think that?s bad go price one of them new tinfoil tractors and see how much they want

Hi Fred

Yes it probably has gone up that much. if It's 70% over 6 years don't complain stuff here in Canada's gone up over 100% and still rising with the $ conversion. Monopoly money will be worth more here in a few years if it carries on compared to the U.S $. There are A lot of things I used to mess with in the shop for fun. Or like my backhoe would be nicer to run with a new seat and a radio for long days.

I was figuring $600 should sort that, nope anything here for a seats getting over 1000 Canadian. if I do it in the U.S it's 800 + for a seat, radio, and speakers to do it properly with the exchange. I guess like the other fun projects it's not happening!.All these sellers are making money but I'm not as a buyer through farming or like many others out there with some jobs. Regards Robert

Interesting that we get almost zero interest for our savings at the bank. Something is Rotten in the State of Denmark.

It is also interesting that they have gradually raised prices in one sector then switch to another sector and raised them there so the public does not notice. Before when there was an inflationary period prices would increase across the board within a short period of time. Could it be that there is massive corruption by the returning Robber Barons.

sv these insane price increases are right across the board in every industry in the world! for example I took my 2005 dodge 3/4 ton in for a couple of recalls at my local dodge dealer, was touring in the show room looking at the new trucks while waiting for the wife to come and pic me up. to replace mine or your 1 ton dually up here now is $93,000.00  insane! for 25 years I have been buying finishing stones to clean and level armatures on Lincoln and miller welders for between $30.00 to $35.00 last month went in to buy a new one $84.00  a $50.00 jump in one month!! when I asked why? I was told there is only one manufacturer of stones left, they have bought out all their competitors, being the only ones left they can set any price they want, and if you need it you gotta pay it, how do i pass that price increase on to a customer?

Originally "Robber Baron' referred to medieval knights, lords who charged illegal tolls to pass over roads on or near their lands. This usually meant German lords who did this.

During the 1900s the term was applied to industrialist who used unscrupulous methods to crush competitors, cheat employees of pensions and fix prices. It also was applied to politicians who used their positions to further their own ambitions at the tax payers expense.

An example was John Rockefeller who owned Standard oil. There were many. Note there is no problem with companies making profit they have to in order to stay in business. The main problem is the definition of reasonable profits. With some there is never enough profit.

A couple of more recent examples follow:
!n the 1950s The FDA brought suit against Upjon, squibb, Bristol, and 3 other pharmaceutical companies for charging an arranged price of $1 per capsule. FDA lost the suit because the court found that drug pricing was not in the FDA's pervue. Public outrage and exposure led to the price being dropped to 10 cents each.

There are more recent examples such as Mylan's pricing of the Epipen. One outrage involved the FDA itself when it gave exclusive distribution rights for colchicine to one company. The price went from 10 cents per dose to $5.00. This natural medication has been prescribed for gout for 3000 years (Egyptian papyrus listing). The excuse given was ludicrous. There are many more including generic drugs not being cheaper because of "pay to delay". This is just one sector of manufacturing. It also occurs in real estate and other sectors. Misuse of eminent domain etc. In the medical services (balance billing). The list of potential and actual abuses some people and companies engage in is long. But when it results in massive company or personal profits at tax payers expense when there is no benefit provided by their action many suffer lowered quality of life or wrecked lives.

There have always been some, but in recent years the numbers of Robber Barons have seemingly skyrocketed and some are brazen in their actions.

What is too much profit? It is kind of like if you ask a abundant who says the rich don't pay enough taxes what would be fair they can never answer but it is obvious they don't think there should be any profit motive. I buy stuff just like the rest of you but how many of you would turn down 10,000 for a tractor worth 2 grand if someone offered it to you?
competition and getting the gov't out of regulating everything to the nth degree is what brings prices down.

The drop in petroleum prices and stagnation of wages over a few years masked the increases in many things that went up a lot. So overall inflation stayed very low.

Carvel,
You Canadians are being screwed by the government up there.
Or some sort of retailer collusion.

How much are those Finishing Stones here in the states?

My in-laws are from Ottawa and the rumor mill says when Target stores opened in Canada, they wanted to price their wares based on USA prices plus exchange rate.

Canadian government/retailers cartel said no, suppliers refused to sell to them and so Target closed up and removed themselves from Canada.
