To keep this tractor related I use this truck to haul my early 70's long 445 around on my flatbed trailer.l have play in the steering shaft "rag"joint.would replacing the rivets with bolts get rid of the slack or is another disc needed? and yes I can buy one but I like to do certain fixes myself.and yes I'm cheap when I can be.......whatever I do it has to be totally safe/reliable.

It comes as a kit, replacement bolts for the rivets that will need to be drilled out, and a new disc.

The kit is only about $10.

I'd ASSUME the rivets are special "shouldered rivets". You got some bolts that match? Are the rivets loose in the "spiders" or loose in the fabric 'cause it's old/deteriorated/oil soaked?

A whole new unit is $16.07 at Rock Auto, PRESUMABLY with manufacturer's liability included! (LARES #205.)

Make sure it is the joint and not the sector. Mine is shot and I am just waiting for better weather.

Years ago we repaired them none ever held up... I may have night mares tonight just thinking about all the Ford's I have done... I don't know when they stopped using them but I am not gonna question why...

We probably repaired them because new ones were so damm high a dealer item only now the parts are cheap (aftermarket) so now its the labor cost.
