Lug wrench for long studs

I bought a 1996 F250 over the weekend. It has the extremely long wheel studs (dually option?) and my regular 4 way won't reach the lug nuts. Where do you get a 4 way that will work on these?

Check if there is a lug wrench stowed with the jack. If not, try a deep well socket.

Deep well socket and a long cheater bar I doubt you could break them loose with a star wrench (rust and salt )

Are they square on the end? I made a wrench for a fellow once for removing them, but you can buy them, or an 8-point socket would work.

This might be what you need,

Regular length acorn type nuts with regular socket and 30" breaker bar. Plus a piece of pipe to slip over that breaker bar handle for more power.

Use your impact wrench, it is deep enough. Don't have one? As your arthritis gets worse you will need one so this is your excuse.

That won't do me or my sons much good on the side of the road.

This thing had running boards that ran the length of the cab to the front wheels and has 0 rust in the cab corners. The bed was wasted by the salt rust though. We pulled it off on Saturday and scraped, pounded and sanded the frame rails before painting them. Have a 9' flat bed sitting the yard I paid $200 for just waiting to be installed. Installed new shocks on the back - every bolt had to wire wheeled to get off then the bolts where rusted to the rubber. Good thing we did it with the bed off. Has one new gas tank and the other has a new pump. I thought I was getting it with good tires then I noticed that for all the tread they must have come off a SUV - P rated tires instead of E or D rated. There goes $500.

Since you have to buy a new tool anyway, why does it have to be a 4-way wrench?

What you need is a deep well socket and a breaker bar.

I googled it. Apparently it's a common search because I didn't get past "deep well 4" before it auto-completed with "way lug wrench." Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any such thing available. Even Ken-Tool doesn't make one.

Heck I bring a generator, electric impact wrench, and the right size deep well sockets with me when I travel.

Save yourself some grief and buy a set of deep lug nuts.
Protected threads do not get full of mud and rust.

You can buy a set of 32 2 inch deep nuts on Ebay for under $30

If 2 inch is not enough I have seen longer ones as well.

ompany I worked for a number of years ago got 4 new Ford trucks with long studs. Two options were replace with shorted studs or a cutoff wheel on a side grinder. Since we had no intention of ever using duel wheels the easy way was cut them off shape up the ends and chase the threads. Quick and easy, spray galvenize paint the ends of the studs. Let dry and chase the threads, do not put the nuts on with wet paint.

I bought an extra long 1/2 Dr socket. Put the socket and breaker bar behind the seat and you are good. I doubt you could break them loose with a four way wrench.

Were I you(obviously I'm not) I'd buy a deep impact socket,3/4" drive, breaker bar and 18" piece of pipe and have at it.Store it with the rest of the stuff behind the seat.A good idea to put anti seize on the studs before putting the nuts back on.I know lots of people say no lube or anti seize on wheel studs but I've been doing it for at least 50 yrs.and haven't lost a wheel yet and you won't turn yourself inside out when pulling a wheel.

But you need a 4' long 4 way to have enough power to loosen them. Or be a circus strong man. And then the standard 4 way would bend.
