Allis Chalmers 170

My 170 has not been used for about a year, stored in a garage the whole time. When I try to start it with the foot clutch depressed and the transmission in either forward or reverse the tractor wants to move either forward or backwards. The free play on the rod connected to the clutch pedal is 5/8" which is called for in the service manual. Also after starting the tractor in neutral with the clutch pedal depressed the gears grind so I need to put it in gear before engaging the starter. The fluids are clean and full and do not have any bad odors. Any suggestions or corrective action would be appreciated because I have no access to a qualified mechanic. Thanks!

(quoted from post at 22:11:20 01/21/18) Clutch disc stuck to flywheel. Try starting in gear with clutch depressed.

lula I will second what vern said, the reason it's stuck to the flywheel is sitting so long without being used. a helpful hint lula, at least once a month or more go out and start your 170 or other equipment that's sitting and just warm it up, run it around the yard, chase the cat down the driveway or just go for a quick cruise. that will keep all your seals from drying out, keep all the moving parts moving. it's been my experience that leaving equipment sit for long periods of time will cause no end of grief. just something I've had to learn the hard way  and more than once

You may have a monster rodent nest up in the clutch housing. I dug, blew, and vacuumed one out of a friends D15II, through the little hole in the bottom.

I would make sure the area is clean, then maybe spray something up in there. Fuel oil?

If you can get it started, drive around your yard with the clutch pedal depressed and hit the brakes hard intermittently. May cause the clutch disc to free itself from the flywheel pressure plate.

Folks are right about the main clutch disk being stuck to the flywheel, but does that tractor not have a long lever called power director. That high /low also has a neutral, put the tractor in gear (low) and get it started then as the others have said ride the brakes WHILE YOU HAVE THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED, should come loose. Next time when you store it for long periods take a small block of wood and block the clutch pedal DOWN>

It could be one tab on the pressure plate is broken. This happened to me,had to split the tractor and replace.

Yes clutch stuck to flywheel. When you get it freed in future when parking for year at a time prop a stick between clutch petal and ?
