Re: Potty training a Dog

My apologies, When I posted the question last night I was so tired I could hardly keep my eyes open. I should have waited. My wife's chai-weenie is house broke, but has an accident in the house maybe once a month. Problem is, the dog hardly ever barks. We have had her for over a year and she has barked less than 10 times total, so she doesn't let you know when she has to go outside. Alta's dog, we got her as a rescue dog, loves women, barely tolerates men. Only pays attention to me when I have food. When Alta is gone and I get home from work, I will take her out of her cage and take her outside, but she rarely will go for me, wants back in the house. Alta gets home and takes her out and she goes OK. Dog doesn't like to go outside in the cold any more than Alta does, so that's the reason for wanting to try the pee pads. I know that many things work better when the moon is in the correct sign, I was just wondering if there was a sign that would work better to try to train the dog. Thanks, Chris

I would be doubtful and hesitant about pee pads. The dog may be confused and go on a pile of newspapers,magazines,rugs.......what about a small fenced area in the yard just for her duties?

You might try putting down newspaper on floor by back door. They learn pretty quick, you will know by sound of paper rattle, to open door to let dog out. Cold weather is not a good time.

Mine loved the litter box and with working 10 shifts it was one less worry. I think she liked it to well seen her hop in the cattles salt box.

I got my little Pomeranian three years ago--a stray who lived in the woods for about a month before the daughter captured her. Her first day here she peed on the floor. The next day I put down a pee pad by the back door and since that time she has not gone anywhere in the house--No. 1 or No. 2. I also let her out in the yard a lot, and she does her business out there the great majority of the time. If it's raining she uses the pad. The beautiful part is that when she needs to go in the night she wakes me up and I put her down off the bed and she goes to the pad. When she's done I boost her back up on the bed.

I can't take credit for training her to do this. I think it has more to do with the fact that I have hardwood floors in my house. Little girl dogs don't like to stand in their pee, so they look for a soft, absorbent surface--pee pad, grass or your carpet.

My daughter has a Scotty dog that she quickly trained. She hung a little bell (like a miniature cow bell) from a ribbon which she attached to the door knob of the back door. The bell hangs at the height of his nose. When he has to go, he bumps it with his nose and you can hear that little bell from anywhere in the house and will wake you if you are sleeping. Also works well when traveling and staying at someone else's house. Just show him where it's at after everyone gets settled in (force him to ring it with his nose) and take him outside (weather he needs to go or not), and when he really does need to go he will remember where it's at and he'll ring it to let you know to let him outside to do his business. Of course, this dog is well behaved and has run of the house even if no ones home so the situation may be different than yours with your dog being kenneled in the house. He also likes the cold so going out in the snow or rain doesn't bother him. But if it would work for your dog, it would give him a voice, and by that I mean, a way to communicate that he needs to go.

i also trained my lab to ring a bell when she wanted to out side to the bathroom. It took 45 minutes for her to learn that. She has been ringing the bell for 9 and half years. BUT, it maybe 2:00am when she wants to go out.

I have always had good luck using a cage to keep the dog when it can not be in my site in until it is house broke. When it is out of the cage I watch its every move. I limit its roaming area inside until broke. Just a few feet in any direction from my chair and have toys for it to play with. Even just weaned pups show signs when they need to go as well as older dogs. As soon as I see a sign it gets out side quick. I always use the same door. I watch and when it is done I call it back in. Being on a farm I also take them outside when doing most everything and limit is distance it can be away from me.
