Visited a family dairy in Arizona after Christmas and took some pictures. They milk about 2300 cows a day and have about 5000 head on the dairy from cafes to cows

That's very impressive,it's been a long time since I got to visit a dairy even less than half that size.

The size of some dairies in the southwest is amazing - I've seen some that are over 10,000 cows with milking going on around the clock. It always surprises me that you find such operations in the middle of a hot, dry desert. I'd be a little concerned about the long-term water availability for agricultural use, especially considering how fast the cities in that part of the country are growing and increasing in water demand.

Two questions.. how do the cows produce in the hot weather like this past summer? And is there decent cropland nearby to feed them? My sister in Tucson said they had days of over 120 degrees.

The production goes down in the summer and they work with the local farmers so they have about 250 acres available for green chop and the rest of the feed gets brought in. It gives the cotton farms a chance to rotate their crops.

When they develop farm land they get the water rights to it so they put in lakes in the desert for high priced homes

If you ever get to north central Indiana there is a dairy you take a look at.It's Called Fair Oaks Dairy and is owned by nine families and have 30.000 cows ans ship 250,000 gallon of milk a day.
