Some help please with a Perkins engine.

Thanks for adding me to the forum! I am working on a bit of an odd application. It's a Perkins 4cyl diesel engine in a 1972 Land Rover. I know absolutely nothing of the history of the vehicle, the engine, or the engine swap although I am quickly learning a bit about the Perkins diesels.

The oil pan on the engine has been hacked up...cut, welded, re-cut, and re-welded, until the mounting flange is warped beyond use. I can only assume it was cut up and pieced back together for clearance or sump location at some point to fit into something. I am trying to find a replacement oil pan.

I have been researching Perkins engines for a few hours now and I am getting a bit overwhelmed with just how many different engines and applications are out there. In starting my research I took numbers off of everything I could find from the cylinder head, valve cover, cover on the right side of the block, bottom of the oil pan, even off of the crankshaft webs and bearing caps. I got numbers off of everything except the ONE I needed....the serial number off of the block.

I do have a bunch of pictures and I was hoping one of you guys might point me in the right direction as to identifying which engine it is, possibly what it came out of, and where I might get an oil pan. The pan is not completely flat all the way around as most I have found pics of on line. It has a flat rail on either side and a "U" shaped cut out at the front and back to fit in the slots on the bearing caps/engine block.

Here's a pic of the engine:

It's one of the indirect injected Perkins, most likely the A4.192, 3.5 inch bore or the larger A4.203, 3.6 inch bore, both have a five inch stroke. If you can post the injection pump 324 number, I'll see if I can find which engine it is by the pump ID.

worked on a willys jeep once that had an engine that looked like that, & was factory option---it was 192 c.i.--62 hp.perkins, IIRC

The Perkins 4.192 was available in Jeeps from 1961-1968, could be where that engine in the Land Rover came out of.

I'm thinking it might well be a 4.203 -
quite a common transplant here in the UK.
Did it myself about 30 years ago - makes a
great towing vehicle! Fits a 1970's Land
Rover with a commercially available (way
back in the day) bell housing adapter. I
recognise the exhaust manifold as being the
same as on mine. Common 'donor' vehicle was
a Commer van. Good luck!

Thanks for all the help so far. Every little bit of info gained gets me a bit closer!
I was able to get a number (stamped in not cast in) off of the left side of the block, just below the head gasket level, towards the rear. It's 203E49993 From that i'm guessing it's a 4.203 but this number doesn't really jive with what I can find on line.

Dieseltech, I was also able to get a number off of the injector pump. It's 700828 with 143 stamped below it.

Well...I got a little more info on the engine. I found a Perkins dealer here in New Jersey. I gave them the engine number and they called Perkins here in the US. They referred them to Perkins in England who made me confirm the engine number. It turns out that this engine was made in a factory "somewhere in the Spain area" and not in a normal Perkins factory. Possibly a situation where the design was licensed out to another manufacturer? Either way Perkins in the UK had no info on the engine and no contact info for who might be the original manufacturer. Looks like its time to custom build a pan. So much for doing things the easy way!! lol
Thanks to anyone who took the time to try and help.
