Is there a problem with leaving a 120V/24V transformer running full time? Like a transformer out of a furnace?

No...what do you think your doorbell does. 5hat little tranformer is on for years. Also your heater has that 24 volt to open the control valve or tell the gun to turn on. They run year round. They are only a few volt amps. Next to nothing.

There shouldn't be. They are always on, there may be an issue though if you are using them at more than their rated output.

Also wondering about something else. Basically what's happening is the electronics in the central vac have fried again, and I'm just going to go without the extra electronics. I have a 120V-24V transformer out of a furnace. Also got a 24V-120V relay. Problem is, is that once the vacuum is running, if you break the 24 volt circuit, it doesn't shut off because I think it's back feeding.
I think I need to put some sort of diode in to prevent the motor from back feeding. What's the right thing to use for this?

Never mind. It turned out that the old board, which I used to tap into the low voltage circuit, was back feeding somehow. Cut the old board out and it works great now.

A transformer will always generate a little heat, for which you're paying. It also has a very small effect on your home's power factor, but you don't pay for that. So it costs you a few cents per year to have a transformer plugged in and doing nothing.
