Back to the future with "old" gas tractors!

I was at Walnut Il a few years ago for the corn picking. Had a chance to see that tractor and talk to Dave. Very interesting man. When I saw the tractor, it was not yet repainted, and no hood on it. Looks like they did a great job.

Definately a market out there to be tapped into ,,The BIG GASsERS is Where this Idea could really take root . Most
Have Very LOw hours , so it would be like finding a like new tractor to put into service ,,.. The modern fuels are
a real PIAZ if these engines are not run regularly . wonder if the efficiency can be improved GREATLY ??/ The
4020$was a guzzler,..as was any 6 cyl.IHC gassers,.. They DO Start Easily ... the 930 Gasser Case i knew back in
the day ,was bad enuf on gas, but powerful ,(Uncle Claimed "That the most powerful best running , pulling Gas
tractor He Ever Seen ,,.But Dont shut it off Hot ! , it may not start ! sometimes ", we shut that 930 off on a
hill to roll start , or pull started it then . I love The Way my Petronix DC Case starts and Runs,,. Thinking
about doing the problematic 511b, if overhauling carb does not help,.. The ol 730 Gasser is great for aQuik start
and do a chore and leave the diesels sleep.,..

(quoted from post at 05:46:17 12/31/17) Wonder how much it'd cost to do?

I would say a minimum of $2000 but with any specialty/custom fabricated parts that need to be made for the individual application (and how much fabrication you can do yourself) maybe around $2500 - $3500. If you want a gas tractor that starts, and runs better than it ever could with a carburetor that's not that bad. A brand new gas tractor would probably cost the same, if not more than the same tractor with a diesel engine. Also a new gas tractor from any manufacturer would have a lot more stuff on it, and be more complicated thanks to the epa.

Too much.

In order to be sold at reasonable prices, things must be manufactured in volume in order to amortize the development and tooling costs over many units.

Unless the administration continues to reign in the EPA (possible), gasoline powered farm tractors are coming.

Stay tuned.

As long as my old diesels are plugged in for a few hours to pre- heat they will start as good or better than my old gas tractors all winter
long in any weather.

I did that with my MH44.

They made a lot of expensive parts that I do not think were needed, a manifold can be drilled for injectors, my cost for parts about a grand.

That's a great idea! The market for updating the remaining 4020 gas tractors may be limited, but generic kit would be perfect for someone who is willing to fine tune one to work on his specific model of tractor.

Kits have been available for ten or twenty years to replace 4 barrel carburetors with fuel injection on big block muscle car engines. They have not sold well. I think two reasons are: because the kits reduce the collector value of original collector cars; and the guys that are not concerned about collector value can buy a new crate engine or find a used complete modern engine for the same cost as a conversion kit.

Too much? Really! What do you think brand new gas powered tractors that are bigger than a riding mower are going to cost?

You have to remember that Joe Average doesn't have the ability to make their own system. If you made a bolt on efi system for a MH44 to sell, would you sell it just for what it cost you in parts.

Came across this video on YouTube a few years back. Gentleman built an EFI kit onto his JD BR. Quite the engineering if you ask me.... Personally, I like the simplicity of the carburetors as well as the lack of wires, etc... Seems to me like less to have problems with.

BR EFI Video included.

Thing of it is. It is fairly easy to swap one engine for another in a truck as engines are some what standardized in terms of mounting. Even ones that aint can use adapter or another. Automotive engines sit between the frame. So that as long as it fits or can be made to fit it will work. Tractor engines in many cases use the engine block its self. As such much harder to switch one engine for another.

I have tried to get him to price me one ever since he has been working on his. Think it would be neat but no luck yet.

Interesting , and right here in Western Canada too. Old BR sounds nice and smooth with injection but I wonder how much it cost and what the reliability is?

Tried to comment about seeing that tractor in person. However the ytmag spambot filter went nuts . Typed no naughty words and yet the post was blocked ???
