My IH wheel tractor has 2 6 volt batteries wired positive to negative to crate 12 volts. If I put 2 12 volt batteries wired positive to positive and negative to negative I still have the 12 volts but does this double my cranking amps?

If you are specifically asking if two 12 Volt batteries in parallel would provide double the cranking power of the two 6 volt batteries you now have in series, we would have to know the CCA ratings of both the original and the replacement batteries.

6 Volt batteries typically have larger plates and cells, and more CCA than a 12 Volt battery of similar physical size.

Paralleling the two 12 Volts doubles the CCA of ONE of them, but that number may or may not be greater than the CCA of the combination you are replacing.

Make sense?

Thanks, That's what I thought. I do not know the CCA of the 6 volt batteries. The parts store should be able to tell me and then I can decide if 2 12's would be better than the 2 6's. This is a cold blooded diesel. Thought more CCA's would help on cold mornings.

Didn't someone a couple of days ago say to switch over to a synthetic blend or straight synthetic? Lets the engine crank over much easier in cold weather. Also nice big cables ALWAYS help things.

Remember it?s not just CCA at the battery terminals, it?s power in watts (voltage X CCA) at the starter that counts. As has been said before, make sure you have big enough cables, both positive and negative. Also corrosion free connections including rust free at the starter to bell housing connection.

The 2 batteries wired in parallel will double the cranking amps of on 12 volt battery, but whether or not it doubles the amps over 2 series batteries is dependent on the CCA of the series batteries. 2 800 amp 6 volts in series will give the same cranking power as 2 12 volt 400 amp batteries in parallel.

Hello 69stang,

One more thing, you need at least 9.6V at the starter while the engine is cranking,

Guido.

The 6 volt batteries on my IH tractors were 950 amp, I think, and the 12 volt ones I replaced them with were, I think were 500 amp. I cranks faster and therefore start quicker than it did with the 2 6's. I do not like batteries in series. If you do need to jump start it it seems easier with batteries in parallel.
