Quote for the day

Been thinking of our oldest and his trek to the big west and thought of this. "If you live your life like a chicken you'll be working for chicken feed."

Very true at times... I went with the add slogan of " stop cooking with cheese" to get one out and about for a life:)
Is it still a case of you pay to leave the island, but no charge to come home?

Hello philip d

It is better to live one day as a lion, then one hundred days as a lamb!

Guido.

I graduated from High School, packed my bag on my motorcycle and took off. I ended up 2500 miles from home with a decent job at a Tuna Plant in Ca. I still ended up buying a place a 1/2 mile from where I grew up a couple of years later and have been here ever since. I learned allot in those few years and experienced things I'll never forget. You got to let them go and hope you taught them well. Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained.

Morality and ethical behavior are steadfast friends. They serve in every situation and do not compromise toward the "Dark Side" Experiencing a cross section of the USA includes the filter of ethical decision making. You did your job instilling in him the foundation of good behavior. He will be fine. Jim (one who left the pocket of the farm to teach)

Maybe my reading/comprehension skills are failing a bit but your post and some of the replies seem to imply that if one stays close to home that there is something cowardly or wrong with that. Remember ....... "different strokes for different folks". Good luck to your son, I'm sure if better job opportunities were available closer to home, he might not have to travel so far for a decent job.

Some posts might imply that, I feel that it is giving permission to discover that which encourages self discovery/dependence. Jim

I did the same thing! I didn't want to farm, wanted to work construction, make big money! My career evolved to becoming a millwright in a paper mill, worked some overtime, saved my money and retired well at 58. Good thing I was able to when I did, many paper mills are cut up for scrap and gone.

Did you ever read EJ Potter's book Michigan Madman? I was in stiches reading about the time he did just what you did. He headed out to California on his motorcycle. The story about the trip home was an absolute riot. He didn't have any trouble getting there, but he sure had an adventure getting back home.

I didn't mean it that way at all, everything in life is a risk, borrowing money for a car ,buying a home getting married taking on a job. I guess I meant follow your heart trust yourself that you are worth the risk and go for it feet first. Doesn't mean you need to move away.

If you are a Star Trek the next Generation fan. The episode "Tapestry" when "Q" made captain Jean-luc Picard be able to change his life. Wow what a tangle he gets into. As he says if you pull one string 5he whole thing can change.

I've been living in the same yard and working in the same barn my whole life. I'm not saying I'm not happy with my choices I sometimes wish I had the opportunity that my son has. I was going to go to vet school after graduation, the plan was I was going to see how school was going and if I didn't like it I could come home to farm. Two weeks from school starting our herdsman announced he was leaving in November and dad said that's ok well just sell the cows so I rethought my defision and never did go to university. My son is hoping to come home to farm in a couple of years with us,maybe it'll happen maybe it won't but at least he gets the opportunity to live life away from home to help him decide where he wants to be and what he wants to do with his life.

It sounds like a good book. I wrote it down and will see if I can get it. I'm still traveling around on a motorcycle when I can. The first Ca. trip was just about 50 years ago, I've been back a couple times on one since. I still always end up back in Mi. though.

I always enjoyed watching EJ's tractors, with the Allison's in them, in pulling events back in the 60's...(southern Mi).

If you find a copy of the book, grab it. The second edition is better. More stories. He could have had a second career as a comedy writer.

the two things an airplane cant use the fuel left in the fuel truck and the air above the plane😣

I looked it up on Amazon. Must be one heck of a book, you can buy it for $189. Guess I will see if the local library has it. Chris

I remember seeing Potter in a 60's hotrod magazine. He was standing next to his dodge station wagon equipped with a 12Cyl. Allison aircraft engine. His seat rested back against the rear window. Maybe that is where he got his name 'Madman'.
