1994 F250 trans parts ??

I am almost at the end of my rope. I have been trying to get a part for my transmission for 6 months. I am wondering if anyone else here has had this problem.

Note- my truck is an early 1994 Ford F250 with the turbo IDI diesel (NOT a Powerstoke).

I put a complete remanufactured transmission in it a little over a year ago. E40D trans. I did not rebuild the original since it had a crack in the case that had been welded several times.

The replacement trans has always worked fine when temps outside are 50 F or warmer. If it is colder-the torque-converter will not unlock until the truck warms up. Can be a little scary if I am ready to throw it into neutral. Almost pushed me through a red-light the first time it happened.

Under warranty, the place where I got the trans has sent me two new solenoid packs. Neither one fits the wire-harness on my truck. The original does. So I have three solenoid-packs sitting here and each is different. I even called the company (Transtar) where the solenoid-packs come from. I asked them to look at my photo of what I need but they will not. They just keep sending more wrong solenoid packs. Truck is tied up in my shop now (been apart for two weeks this time). I am almost ready to give up and put the old solenoid-pack back in. Note - I do not even know for sure it is the problem that makes the torque-converter not unlock when cold.

It is hard to believe it is this hard to find the correct part for something as common as a Ford truck. My solenoid is the one with the thin-wall harness plug.

Just for kicks what kind of fluid are you running in the transmission. If it works after warming up seems it needs lighter fluid/ just a thought. Sorry I can,t help on the plugs but can see the difference. I really don,t follow you thinking on it being the solenoid causing the torque problem but then you have worked on this thing and I know you are pretty sharp.. LOl

I would post on this site. Tremendous amount of knowledge on Fords of this era. I run the same vintage trucks on the farm, diesel and 460 gas but I will not have an automatic, they will NOT hold up under heat, ie pulling a good load with the goose and the 5 speeds are indistructable. 2 of my trucks are 97s and both have close to 500,000 on them

Prnddl supplies most of the trans shops in S.E. Michigan with parts. Very knowledgeable. Just reuilt the grandsons 4l60e in his Firebird with parts from them. The trans in his car was unique to that year. That trans was used for quite a few years, but his is an odd ball. They had the few parts no one else did, and knew exactly what it was.

That link sends you to a Northern Tool site for a set of log tongs.

Torque-converter locks with a hydraulic-powered clutch, turned "on" or "off" by the lock-up solenoid. Seems the only two obvious causes could be the piston powering the clutch getting stuck, or the solenoid getting stuck Of those two things - changing the solenoid is all I can do without pulling the transmission back out.

Have you tested the brake switch to be sure it?s working? Have you tried using the o/d off button either of these should take it out of lock up if the problem is electrical

I've never noticed a thicker walled connector like those, it does look odd (maybe needs a new pigtail for their part). They should send a different (corect) part from a different supplier, maybe the dealer. I don't think the solenoid pack is the issue though. If the TCC solenoid failed it would be stuck on for the TCC to stay applied which is rare, and even more so when is starts working after warming up. Low fluid level, loss of line pressure, along with a few other internal things like valve body, pump/converter clutch control valve, pump, seal/rings etc. Hydraulic pressure releases the clutch on this one, loss of pressure results in locked clutch.

Did the filter fall off when you dropped the pan? Is this a 4wd, maybe with a 2wd filter installed? Filter seal look good?

I had a 95 F-350 with E4OD, we went thru a few transmissions because of various reasons.
The two transmission shops I did business with would only install factory Ford solenoid packs, claimed they had to many problems with aftermarket solenoid packs.

My nephew had a similar lock up issue a few months ago, convertor locked as he was stopping at a red light, nearly pushed him into the intersection.
He claimed the torque convertor was broke causing it to lockup intermittently.

Not sure if they made a change between 95-96 or 96-97 but there's a difference in the wiring or valve bodies (don't remember now).
We learned that the hard way after installing a used 97 trans in my 95 truck.

On going issues with automatic transmissions is why I have a manual trans today.

Well not being and expert on the EOD's as my knowledge stops on the C 6's but when it comes to anything more then clutches and seals myself i go to the factory store forthe electrical stuff . Yep may cost a few bucks more but ya get the part made for what your working on . Myself i do not care for slush boxes since they only make two , the one that is already out and the one that is going out.
