Hi I have a 1947 ford n-8 that has been in my wife's family since new. Its up my Prather Ca. on a family ranch that no body lives at for now I have been going up there for the poast 40 yeays taking care of it so I can retire there. Well this tractor starts all the time. I just have a pretty bad oil leak at the bottom of the distributor shaft housing on the front, there is a gap about 1/4 inch and it looks like either a cover goes there or maybe a bad oil seal at the bottom of the shaft don't know this is the only 8n I have work on, I have pictures can anybody help!!! thanks

A 47 would be a front mount Distributator and there is lust 2 5/16" bolts holding the complete unit on. The only way there could be a gab is if those bolts are falling out and if it was that loose to have a gap like that then the tangs that fit into the cam shaft that drives it would not make connrction for to be able to get it to run. So only thing is if somehow the bottom of the distribuator got busted off. But I see no way that could happen. That is same distributor as on my 44 2N that in the last couple of months we had off severral times. Just make sure when you take the distributor off you do not loose the bolts as I think they are 7/8" and 1" hits the timing gear.

I can't help with the oil leak, but I can tell you what to call the tractor: It's a 8N. Tractors can be very sensitive--if you don't call them by the right name, they often won't run right. Merry Christmas.

While there where a few 8Ns made in 1947 the yare not a 1947 model tractor they are a 1948. Yes just like cars one could buy a 1948 8N ford in late 1947 but they are still a 1948.
As for the oil leak that could be one of a number of things put in that area. Frond crank shaft seal or governor gasket or other such simple problem

9 series Ford models are designated by the last digit of the year that they were designed 9n (1939)
2N (1942) 8N (1948)

The dizzy only goes on one way. If install the other way it
won't seat properly and trying to tighten it would have a big
gap or break an ear on the dizzy. And there is a gasket that
goes under the dizzy. Even withouT a gasket it should have the
gap you are talking about. So I would pull the dizzy and check
it.
Next time post in the 9n/2n/8n section.
