Buying JD 3020 tractor online - yes or no?

I am in the market for a JD 3020 gas for less then $5000, and in my area of upstate NY there just aren't any to be had. I have been looking on line at dealers like in NC, OH, IL, IN, etc., and I see a few that get my interest. My gut instinct says to never buy something sight unseen for this kind of money, but on the other hand I really have no other options. Has anyone here did this before and bought a tractor online, and if so, what has been your experience?

I will not buy anything until either myself or a trusted friend looks at it. That being said I have bought equipment form all over the US. This site has people all over the US. Most times a fellow Yter is glad to help out and look at some thing.

In particular, in Polkton NC, at Polkton Equip , he has 3020 gas narrow front with only 2500 hours for $4900, which means I can probably get it for $4000. But something with this low hours and cheap scares me a little.

Odds are hours aren't original. Many, many, if not most of these girls have had the tach replaced at one time or another.

It can pay to be very patient. Something may show up very close to home. When I lived in central NY, there were quite a few 3020s around.

I bought this one cheap been wanting a 3020 because of how much I like my 4020 I walked into the local fiat cnh dealership one day and asked my salesman buddy if he knew of a 3020 he thought for a minute and said well do you want one that needs engine work ? I said how much he said 2000$ I said ok turned out it had new tires all around new injection pump and a new starter . So I took it home read through the service manual that came with the tractor about doing a tune up went through all the steps and found the number one and number 4 intake and exhaust valves way to tight the injection pump timing was way off adjusted everything to spec and drained the fuel tank removed and cleaned the entire fuel delivery system put new filters on new fuel in and a big bottle of injector cleaner and put er to work the engine is running like a top now

Never have bought one site unseen, but I never would either unless it was something super rare and condition didn't matter a lick as long as I had one of the very few or only one in existence. That's just too common of a tractor to be taking a $5000 risk on in my book.

I've bought several pieces of equipment online sight unseen, and come out reasonably well. Key is I've always expected it to be junk and paid accordingly.

I've also had a few duds, both things I had looked at first, or not.

I would rather have a good Super M gas or a 400 or 450 than a 3020 gas. Neighbor had one years ago and our 450 would
work the 3020 into the ground....

Ya I?d lots rather have a tractor with open center hydraulics that you can?t get on and off of and a gear Shift beteeen your legs . And how many times did you work in the exact same field pulling the exact same implement at the exact same speed at the exact same depth ?

In today?s age If they have it for sale on the internet then they should be able to post some videos of it being started , with it running and also of the blow buy and the hydraulics working and lots of pictures

Have you operated any yet? I know you were concerned about the comfort. I love my 3010 and have spent many hours on a 4020. The hydraulic and PTO controls are kind of hard to reach but they're out of the way. I would recommend a side console for sure and definitely would not want to buy one online unless you know that's what you want and the price was right to justify it having problems. I have never had a gas but haven't heard much good about them.

I bought a used pick up in Nebraska, I live in Michigan, without physically looking at it first. One of the most nerve racking times of my life lol. I wanted an older low mike diesel 4x4 in good shape, which are hard to come by. The price was right. Lots of pics and a video. I knew if it sat a few days it wouldn't last. Figured I could put a couple k into it if I had to and be ahead. Was also at a reputable dealer that I researched before I bought it. Worked out well, but it gave me enough sleepless nights I don't think I'd do it again.

I go with Cmore. I would not take a 3010-3020 if given to me to have to use it. Running my uncles was enough

I do not get the hype about the side console we
had a 4020 and a 4320 4020 is a dash control and
the 4320 was of course a side console can?t say
one was a bit better than the other one I sure would
never ever pay more for a side console As far as
comfort I don?t think there is a tractor more
comfortable the power steering is still finger touch
easy even after 50 years my 4020 I grew up on and
my 3020 are both 66 models the seats are as
comfortable as any seat we have on the farm the
powershift in the 3020 is sure nice to do field work
with I like the synchro range on the loader both
tractor have enough lugging ability you really don?t
need to downshift anyway but the powershift makes
it nice to shift down to make a turn at the end of the
field and for anybody not smart enough troops shift
a synchro I enclosed a diagram everything is in a
straight line

I get your point but I'd much rather have a shift on the floor than anything on the console. Less parts to cause problems

If you think you can talk a dealer down from $4900 to $4000 you must be one heck of a talker. Any dealer I've been to, the price is the price, pay it or don't. They might come down $50 or $100, and act like you're ruining their kids' Christmas, maybe even quiver the lip and squeeze out a tear...

Ask if someone on here is close to there is willing to give it a look. They can at least tell you if they think it is being presented correctly. I would say like others, if you don?t see it with your own eyes or someone you know and trust, buy it cheap.

That shift on console is partley why it was so uncomfortable, 2010 as well. I don't mine the shifter between legs, hate in dash.

JD 3020/4020 with shift on the dash outsold & will still outsell many tractors with gear shift levers between operators legs.

I bought a 1840 skidloader online... ebay auction.. it was about 2.5 hours south.. I ended up with the final bid infact was the only bidder.. Contacted the guy. Told me to come up and if I didnt want it he wouldnt hold me to it.. That was 8 years now.. Great machine...few things I had to do but over all good by.. that was a 7M buy.. most Ive ever done online.. actually one of the first purchases..one of the things that sold me was they had just had both hydrostat motors rebuilt.. had the receipts and work order.. so there was 3500 in new work.. so why not.. turned out good..
