A Christmas Story

Wife and I had 4 offspring. Christmas was always a big deal event. One year we got all the necessary things done and it was time to open the gifts. Kids were pretty young so there was a lot of enthusiasm.

Mom always took on the job of santa and started doling out the goodies. The piles around the kids grew while the pile around the tree shrank. I kept looking for the pile around mom and there was none, as I was engulfed in the enthusiasm of the kids as they opened theirs. The tree pile was gone and she had none........I am not over that yet and that was 40 years ago. Just got so wrapped up in the kids, I plum forgot about getting her anything. Guarantee you that never happened again and she didn't make a big deal out of it. She was enjoying the moment the kids were having. We had 49 Christmases together...........

My brother was born on Christmas Eve, birthday was yesterday. Poor guy as a kid got ripped off every year as far as presents were concerned. Oh he got them, pretty much little stuff unlike the rest of us got throughout the year. But, since you brought up "A Christmas Story", I turned on the TV and there is the annual 24 hours of "A Christmas Story" and they are in town so that Ralphie can tell the big guy, Santa that he wants a Red Ryder BB gun. Now, the Christmas parade and Santa in a chimney being pulled by a Farmall...H I think it was. It flew by so fast but I think it was an H. I never noticed that before. Now I'm going to have to watch it again so I can see if it was an H.

Merry Christmas to all.

We used to be involved with my wife's large, extended family, which was all wrapped into a church. It was hard to tell where one started and one ended. It was really a mess, and that's why we eventually extricated ourselves. I'll not forget the frustration of drawing names for exchanging Christmas gifts. What should have been a joyous occasion for family and friends was turned into a burden, trying to guess, and shop, and waste effort on getting someone something they didn't need or want.

That's not a problem in a family. Kids are always excited. We have adopted the policy "Christmas is for kids". And of course for anyone you know needs or would appreciate something. In early November we took a new chest freezer, full of meat, to our youngest's family, several states away. While there, our son mentioned having to go to a service station to inflate his car tires. So, he just got surprised with an air compressor for Christmas. What a pleasure/blessing it is, to see the delight/appreciation in receiving an unexpected gift.

Bob your story sounds so much like Marilyn’s large extended family Christmas. The gift giving was finally dropped and the occasion became a nice friendly meal and stress free social gathering.

It sure changes as we age. As kids we can never get too much, as older adults it's as we'd rather be the giver than getter. Hope your wife's feelings weren't hurt way back then.

I ordered a gift for my wife that guaranteed "two day shipping". That was 10 days ago. It's supposed to arrive tomorrow, the 26th.
She says she understands, but still.....

I agree with the "skip the gifts' part also.At my family's Christmas,I got called a scrooge, party pooper, etc.,when I started saying it would be nicer without the gifts. And it is,finally, though a couple STILL think they have to get everyone something. I just want to visit, and catch up; we don't see some but once or twice a year.Good food, and good company is the best.Mark
