Parts quality these days...

Aftermarket ignition lock cylinders for a 1988 Chevy pickup...

Installed the one on the right in the first photo, stupidly completely assembled the steering column and steering wheel, then found out the key couldn't be turned far enough in the CW direction to get to "Start".

Note the difference on the positions of the slots end the end of the cylinders... both are turned against the stop in the "CW" direction as viewed from the key end.

In the second photo, taken from the other side, note the angular position of the keys... the one on the right is correct.

Both boxes list the same generic part number, US107L, yet are so different.

I put it all back together with the Standard Ignition version, and it worked perfectly.

FUN to have done that job TWICE!

Yes it is a crap shoot with after market parts. Buttttt with an after market switch I recently bought for my Ford 3000 costing $6 and some change vs OEM 10x, and a reasonable amount of application information, I won the toss "this time".....

Hear you on "THE SECOND TIME" thing. The glass is half full. At least you knew your way around the second time, the process went a lot faster, you taught yourself to test before closure, and you didn't have to wonder if you missed something getting it all back together due to oversight/lack of experience with the task.

Merry Christmas

I googled Advantech and got a lot of hits but onone that I could be sure were autocrats. Bob, do you know how long their line is and what sort of parts store carries them?

I also have been disappointed in some items I have purchased. As a result I have been trying other sources.

On my good list at this point is NAPA and Shoup.

Merry Christmas to all of you and thanks to all of you.

I bought some new struts for my old chrysler put them on and took it to be aligned could not get the steering wheel strait. seems they were just off center a little bit like your lock cylinders but I can live with a steering wheel not centered .

Park with wheels straight, remove steering wheel, turn loose wheel to the proper position, place on shaft, tighten steering wheel nut. Wheel will now be centered.

The "Advantech" part is by AIRTEX/WELLS, sourced from Rock Auto.

Don't get me started on that. I think that they all have slipped whether auto part store, farm implement dealer, or other. All the farm equipment manufacturers have slipped including JD, CNH, and AGCO. Getting tired of redoing a job that should be done for ten years only to have to redo in a year or so.

The local parts store carries Airtex electrical stuff. I quit using any of it. The majority of it was low quality junk. Switches that would not last a year. I get most of that type of stuff from Napa now and it seems to be of higher quality.

Yep, the "Standard Ignition" part that worked is made by "SMP", who also makes the NAPA electrical parts.

I gotta ask, if you ordered the first one from RockAuto, why not order the Genuine Ac Delco from Rockauto for $9 more? My luck with auto parts has been pretty good lately, but I try to order OE Ac Delco parts or the next best thing.

There is no reason for your steering wheel not to be straight. That is the mark of an inexperienced alignment mechanic. The struts have nothing to do with centering the steering wheel.
A point of information:
When the steering wheel is centered, the steering gear or rack is also on center, where it is designed to operate while driving in a straight line. When the gear or rack is off center, it causes drift or pull or just plain wandering. Makes it a handful to keep in your lane.
