Starting issues

I have a Ford 9n that's been
converted to 12 volt. I've
been having problems with
getting it started. I have
charged the battery and can
start it when I put a screw
drive across the starter
switch relay. But why doesn't
that starter switch work? I
just replaced it.
Funny thing too, when I check
voltage from positive battery
terminal to the starter cable
u get a reading of 12.48
volts. When I check the
battery side cable the starter
switch it reads zero. Why
isn't the starter turning over
it reads that it's getting
12.48volts to it?

"voltage from positive battery terminal to the starter cable u

Without the the transmission mounted button pushed to engage
the starter switch under the battery box, this sounds like normal
operation to me. And it is a switch, not a relay or solenoid.

My guess, since you can jump the switch and it works, is that
your linkage is worn where it goes through the transmission.
That's a common problem. It just doesn't push far enough to
actually engage the switch/starter anymore.

It can be rigged by JB Welding a washer or a penny to the top
of the actual switch when you remove it with the two bolts under
the battery tray; or you can fix the linkage correctly.

"when I check voltage from positive battery terminal to the starter cable u get a reading of 12.48 volts"
That's normal when everthing is working right. Reason is that starter is at ground potential(with some resistance through windings) at all times and going from battery positive to ground read's 12v.

billyar, he said he was working on a 9N.
It sounds like you are describing the solenoid on an 8N.
They are not the same.
The 9N did not have a solenoid on the starter and there was no
wire running to the push button on the top of the transmission.
