Tracor engine 239 D

last month I bought I.H. tractor 674 that had a 239 diesel engine in it. What I did not know was this engine was used between 1972 threw 1990 in different tractor models. The tractor I bought had thrown a rod and there was a whole in the side of the block. Cheaper to buy another block than to fix the old block. I guess this 239 diesel engine has to be a good one if they ran it in all these different tractors. Models that have the 239 Diesel engine in it is: I.H 674, 544,574 and in CASE 684, 685 tractors.

They definitely were used in a lot of tractors and and then they turbocharged it and used it in dozers and loaders, but I personally have never seen one go much over 4000 hours without needing repairs. I have a 684 here at my shop now that needs rebuilding, but not sure if the owner is going to spend the money. It has a new Bush Hog QT loader on it, which is probably worth more than the tractor.

Hi my brother has a 684 with over 10,000 hrs on it and still running good. Neighbors had 684 with over 8500 hrs when he traded it and someone else bought it and used it without over hauling. Engine life is all about proper maintenance. Good oil and filters, good fuel and filters and keep air filter clean or replaced.

Those are good engines I don?t care what anybody says long as you take care I hope a guy out he quit feeding hogs he?s got over 7000 hours on it and runs like a top only thing I ever seen that with the whole tractors the park break and we put a couple clutches at it but they made for a loader tractor too short wheelbase and less you got front wheel drive I know a guy that had one just like yours and the motor was bad He got a engine out of a cotton picker and change the pump over in their rear plate and it runs like a top

My boy has one in a 674. When he bought it, it had new sleeves & pistons because the first owner did not check the PH of the coolant so the sleeves got holes in them. But we love it.

The old IH TD 7 and 8 dozers used the D239 as well. They bring good money for a rebuildable core around here it seems. Seems like last time I asked, Worthington's had a couple for around $2000 or $2500 for a rebuildable core.

The 695, 4230, and c60 and IH 5000 swather used it as well. One of the reasons you don't see real high hours on a utility tractor is that they are used short periods of time and shut off again. You need the 14 hr field work sessions to get the big hours and these size tractors are seldom used for that so I think they are pretty good engines. Experience with a D268 myself.
