non seating grease zrks

Is there such a thing as non seating balls in grease zerks. Bought a new mower conditioner and prepping it for next season. Every grease zerk that I have been on spit grease back out the end after greasing. Seems weird the whole machine has this characteristic. About 20 zerks on the machine and nothing stated in owners manual about such a set up. Thought maybe they are intended to relieve pressure to not blow out seals.John Deere 956 MOCO

If grease can come out, how can dirt keep from getting in? Maybe Deere shopped at the cheap place for components.

Alemite lists zerks with no check ball in catalog. Have seen a few application where they were used. This doesn't sound like application where they would be used .

My two cents. Fistly, did you unscrew one yet? Make sure it has a 5/16 nut on it and take one out. Wash in brake cleaner and look at the inside end. There should be a rolled crip collar and inside you should see a tiny spring . The other end you should see just a little bit of a much bigger ball that seals the fitting. You could have fittings that purposely let out excess pressure and you need to carefully wipe them everytime you are going to grease. BUT..... you could also have a machine that will endup having a recall for decective fittings. Skip the dealer and call the manufacturer. Either they don't even know about it, or there is a reason for these. I would call the manufacturer.

Sounds like the wrong zerks were installed.

There are zerks made without a check ball, they are typically used in low budget applications, like casters.

As for relieving pressure to protect seals, the damage is done by over greasing, not by retaining pressure. Since it is a new mower, to protect the warranty I would check with the dealer, see if they think it is supposed to be that way. If not, they should fix it. Or have an explanation for why, and what will keep the grease in and dirt out!
