Air Rifle (not BB Gun) for 6 year old

I want to get my 6 year old daughter an air rifle for Christmas. It seems like most BB Guns nowadays are junk from the reviews I read. Although she is young and learning, an inaccurate gun is not something I'm interested in. It seems like a lot of these newer style 1200 fps air rifles with a spring action are the way to go. They get very good reviews and are capable of taking varmints. My only concern is they say they have some recoil. While she is a tough country girl, she is still only 6. What is the recoil like on one of these for a 6 year old? What opinions do you have? I'm not interested in any lectures on letting a 6 years old use firearms. This will be a strictly controlled environment.

Don't recall the recoil figures for air riffles WHAT I would suggest is to go to a repritable Gun shop; one who has been business for a long
time ;maybe a family type business; seek out their expertise then also buy from them.
Also teach gun safety or find a good gun safety teacher in your local.
Merry Christmas to all!

I have a spring type rifle that uses BB's or pellets. I have killed squirrels with it using pellets. I haven't noticed any recoil, not saying there's none, just not enough worry with.

The closest thing I have to something like that is a pump up Crossman that you can shoot bb's and pellets. I got the one with the rifled barrel. Shoots pellets nice. Pain to have to keep pumping up though. Nothing worse than shooting a bb gun where you can see the bb's flying and with each shot they go a different direction !
Even a .22 would be fine and you can buy reduced velocity ammo for them.
Start them out young ! and teach them safety. I got on my kids to not even point the toy guns at people ! I know someone who came VERY close to loosing an eye from a nerf gun !

I have a Ruger Air Hawk. Pretty accurate
for a $90 air gun, but might be a little big
for a 6 year old. It is also fairly loud
for an air rifle, if you have whiner
neighbors. Another option is a youth size
22lr. I would recommend a Savage Rascal in
that category, as I have one. Very light
and is a tack driver. With shorts or Aguila
Colibri rounds, it is quieter than the
Ruger. In fact, with Colibri rounds, all
you hear is the hammer. The Rascal is a bit
pricier than a Cricket, but is self cocking
when the bolt is cycled. Cocking a Cricket
is an extra step, and they can be stiff for
smaller kids.

Giving you a place to see when you want the pinical of performance.
These guys in England sure like to rat and Squirrel hunt. Also
consider the different calibers available. I had no idae 5hey have
22cal air rifles. Deadly stuff for sure.
English rat hunt.

I also have a Ruger Air Hawk. I don't think recoil would be an issue for her. I do think it would be too heavy, and don't think she would be able to cock it. My slightly built 12 year old grandson is very
accurate with it, but can't quite cock it yet. I have killed several squirrels with it, and a very curious crow. With the right pellets, it is accurate and deadly.

I bought a Ruger for my son several years ago with
the single break action and something like 12-1400
FPS. It is pretty hard to cock and it weighs close to
7lbs, I would not recommend it for a beginner. I
would start with a more youth oriented gun even if it
is just a red rider, then graduate up to something in
her ability range. Nothing more frustrating to
youngster than to not be able to operate it correctly-
she wants to make you proud! That gives you an
excuse to go back and do more gun shopping when
she outgrows it, I?m sure she?ll have a birthday
coming up....

I need to buy a small rifle to shoot woodpeckers in the spring I have been using 410. would a .22 with bird shot work? it would be quieter then the 410. thanks

Actualy those $50 pump up bb/pellet rifles walmart sells are surprisely accurate for the money. Obviously not a Beeman or Benjamin or something like that but still a decent gun. Just watch out because the crown of the barrel is plastic. DONT OVER PUMP THEM. But use them like the instructions say ane they are an okay gun. Next step up would be a Benjamin pump up. They run about $200 last I checked( been quite awhile since I checked though so price is probably has gone up). But a realy well loved and durable gun. I would avoid the spring guns for a kid as recoil requires skill to be accurate. Pump up also can vary the power down range

I have both a crossman .22 cal. CO2
powered pellet rifle and pistol. Very
accurate and shoot hard. No pumping.
Just load and cock. May be a little
difficult for a youngster to cock but
maybe no more difficult than pumping
the air model. Just have to shoot
until the gas tube is empty or it
will leak out over several days.

For my son's 6th birthday I bought him and me each a Daisy BB gun. We countless hours 'playing',shooting targets,cans...... he learned the fundamentals of gun safety. The Daisy guns were plenty accuret for the short range we ere shooting. We could could even practice in the shop in winter. He got to where he could out shootme! LOL. his was completely worn out. I still have mine in the shop where I still shoot from time to time. Get the Daisy. One for her,one for you. Money well spent.Time together, priceless.

I have a spring loaded one it shoots 1200 FPS and there is very little recoil. It will hoot a
pellet thru a 3/4 inch board at 50 yards. I got the .177 but get the 22 cal one if you intend on
hunting. I have shot coon with mine and one wood chuck but they go for a ways

A second this, for a n 8 year old. They may have trouble cocking the spring on a spring air rifle. It's probably different the last few years, but for awhile Walmart .22 lr was cheaper than the quality pellets for the real air rifles. Unless you live in town the .22 is a better option at that point.

I have a 22 cal. Gamo air rifle with a scope. You cock it once for every pellet fired. I don't think a 6yr old could cock it. It's very accurate I use it on chipmunks and red squirrels, they like to get in the house in the winter. Haven't seen a chipmunk all summer. Supposed to be close to the same muzzle velocity as a 22 rifle. It's whisper quiet. and costs $200

I have a pellet gun I keep in my barn. No, a 6 year old girl would not be able to cock it. I think a 12 year old would have her hands full with it. I
shot a coon with it a month ago, hit it in shoulder, it ran 15 feet, rolled around for ten seconds and died. Not really a toy?

This wasn't something I was expecting her to be able to operate on her own. I was going to get it ready for her to shoot. At any rate, I already have a cricket that my grandfather bought me when I was a kid. I told her about a month ago it is for her. She's asked me a few times now when she can shoot it. I believe since I have the cricket, I may just get the red rider to see how it works for her. They're only $30. If we want to do more than the plinkin I can get the cricket out.

(quoted from post at 11:33:17 12/06/17) I need to buy a small rifle to shoot woodpeckers in the spring I have been using 410. would a .22 with bird shot work? it would be quieter then the 410. thanks

Since woodpeckers are a protected species you might want to remind everyone that you have a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since someone else may see your post and risk significant fines and incarceration for breaking Federal law by not having a lethal permit. I'm surprised you have a permit, they are very rarely issued.

My new .177 pellet gun came with a junk scope..I put a Weaver 40MM 3-9 scope on it and it is deadly accurate at least out past 50 yards..

I mean, less than a 1" group at 50 yds...

I would say it would take out groundhogs and maybe even a Fox...

problem with it and a 6 year old would be that it takes all I can do to cock that thing (Bear Mountain 1,200 fps).

I got it to rid the Cemetery of Groundhogs..

I'm a 4H BB and air rifle coach. Daisy makes
a very accurate BB rifle for about $120. It
will put every BB through one hole at 5
meters. You can shoot it indoors at a box
full of newspaper. I recommend taking her to
an organized weekly club. Kids love to
compete. At about 13 she will move up to
Sporter class with a C02 or compressed air
rifle. Then to Precision class then off to
college and the Olympics. Females generally
outshoot males.
Please be aware that springer pellet guns
beed a scope designed for that purpose. The
recoil is reverse that of a rifle. The
backwards recoil will ruin the wrong scope
over time.

My daughter started out at 9 years old on a .177 pellet rifle and with in a year she was shooting a .22 cal. Ruger 77-22. After using the 77-22 for a short
time she didn't want anything to do with the air rifle. Today at the age of 35 her and her husband go to range with their 9 mm and 380 pistols.

.22 birdshot is lethal on birds up to 10 ft. Not much more.16-18 if you happen to have old Remington smoothbore rifle.

Pretty sure she will handle it without a problem; not much there at all! :)

My Benjamin .22 air rifle is pump, 1970 era. It has killed squirrels, possums and coons. No noticeable recoil. Walnut stock. Don't make em like they use to.

Well... when my son was about that age, probably younger, he came up to me and said, Dad, I need a BB gun. I said fine, but wouldn't you rather have a .22 rifle? Naturally, he said yes. I told him that either way, it was going to be locked up in the safe when I wasn't around. He took the .22 These days there are some good starter guns such as Chipmunk or a Cricket. Very light weight and no recoil. One of the issues of most of the airguns is cocking them. Some are tuff even for me! That being said, the CO2 guns are good but ya hafta buy the darn co2 cartridges.
Since I've gone through this long ago, I'd look at the little .22 long rifle guns. Regardless of the gun, when young, they must always supervised. My 2 cents.
