8n needs new shoes

It looks like the time has come to get some rear tires for my 8n. It has 12.4-28 ag tires. Anybody know where I can get some good used in the DeSoto Missouri area. Already checked craigslist. No luck there.Found new for $265 8 ply with tubes. Thanks for the help

Finding good used tires in that size is like trying to find hens teeth. I always keep my eyes open for most any 28 inch tire and 2 and 38. The key is most run them till there is no life left in them.
By the way that price for a tire and tube is a very good price. I had to replace a tire on my Oliver S88 and just the time no tube was $500.

Thanks Old. I didn't hate tbe price for new but i just thought I'd check with the forum. One tire has a bad sidewall and is flat.the other is ok but still probably older than me. Maybe I'll get 2 new and keep the better one for a spare. Guess I can use the bad one as a planter for tomatoes.
Still open to suggestions if I can save a few bucks.

By the way I too am in Missouri. I'm in the Lake of the Ozarks area.
I have one machine a W Speed patrol that I was told by a guy over 20 years ago that I needed new tires on it. Well this past summer I did have to put on one of the very good used tires I had picked up for it some 15 plus years ago. I run tires till the tube is sticking out because they so much now days

Got that quote from Hartman Farm supply in Millstadt Illinois. Very reputable outfit. They were very helpful with my dad's 1210.

That price seems very good for new tires. Especially for 8 ply with tubes.
If I were buying tires for an 8N though I would buy the correct size which is 11.2X28
Your reverse gear is Too Fast already without adding to the problem with oversized tires. 11.2s are likely a little cheaper as well.

Like with many things people seem to like to go with bigger tires and as said with reverse like it is the 12.4 adds speed and the 8N in all gears is really to fast for many things

I will take the 11.2 any-day over 12.4's but these days they list some a 11.2/12.4 they are 12.4's gimme the straight 11.2's and I will out work one with 12.4's any day of the week...

I just checked with my old tire suppliers. Looks like That price should include mounting the tires on the machine at the tire dealership. They might get another $10.00 per tire to pump fluid if you have it.

I grew up on/with tractors as a kid.
My first experience with Fords was a 2N my father left me. Engine was very good. I put new rears on it (11.2 28) and ran it for a couple of years. Liked it a lot. Meanwhile I learned about the advantages the 8Ns had - position control, drawbar, etc. Found a smokey 8N and swapped engines. Kept my new tires, nice fenders, etc.
Sold the now smokey 2N.
Reverse on that 8N was such a disapointment that I immediately started looking for a different tractor. How any designer/engineer could think that reverse was appropriate for farm work is beyond me. It basically wrecked those 8Ns - an otherwise handy little machine. At least it did for me. That's why I always caution guys who want to put oversized tires on one.
If you want more traction add rear ballast. Either fluid or cast iron. I put CI weights on mine - 225 lbs/side. Helped a Lot. Several Ford tractors later I still have the weights. Will sell you my tractor but not my weights.
Good luck whatever size you pick.

Do you mean like this Old? Run 'em till you see the air.

Good to see another fan of Cat Ballou here. No, this comment has nothing to do with tires.

Well think about it. You pop the clutch so fast that it spins out and that in turn can lead to broken axles sheared ring gear bolts and other such thing that will cost you a lot of time and $$$.

Ya doing that on a motorcycle and popping a wheelie and then riding that wheelie is cool but not things like that with tractors. And yes I have been riding scots for 47 years now

I replaced my rear tires last year. I went with 12.4 x 28 and added no ballast. I don't plow, or till so didn't really need that kind of traction. Got them for $700 incl tubes installed. I was happy not to have to do the job, as the old tires and tubes had been on their since the Earth was flat.
