So coming home from work I saw someone spraying a corn field that was harvested not long ago. This is in Ohio so growing season is done. Wonder what they would be spraying for ? Anyone have a clue ?

probably putting herbicide down to eliminate weeds in early spring.basis and canopy are two common herbicides put down in the fall.

Or around here some were trying to aid stalk decay by spraying 28% in the fall.---Tee

Probably spraying carbon. It makes the stalks break down quicker. May also have some 2-4d to knock any broadleaves....

A lot of people in around me in Ohio spray corn stalks to prevent weeds especially if no tilling in the spring

They could be spraying weeds that germinate and start to grow in the fall, take a winter nap and then come up with a vengeance in the spring. Dandelions and musk thistles in pastures and lawns are a couple that come to mind. They are easy to kill in the fall, tougher to kill in the spring. In the fall these weeds can be sprayed with 2-4d or dicambe without worries about drift.

We don’t have any field weeds like that here in northwest Iowa that I know of but areas with only slightly climates than northwest Iowa do have these weeds.

Or it could be fertilizer.

Weed control, fertilizer or a conditioner to preserve nitrogen or break down organic matter. Unlikely but they could be hydro seeding a cover crop on or even applying manure depending on the spray rig.

I would bet they were spraying Canopy or Roundup-24-D. We spray our stalks every fall with Canopy to kill the winter annuals
