2003 chevy pick-up, 6.0 just lost oil preasure. 150,000 miles, has very little , lifters are gettin noisy.......anybody know what's wrong?
 
Change oil filter.This happened to my daughters 09 chevy. Mechanic told her some cheaper oil filters used can cause this problem.Cured her problem.Something about pressure relief bypass failing.
 
I seem to remember reading on here sometime a year or two ago that someone had a few of the same truck in a fleet with the 6.0. Their mechanic had used 15-40 and one by one the oil pump shafts failed.
I run a 6.0 in my company Van and 129676 Miles when I backed it in tonight, and the only engine troubles I have had were a throttle position sensor at about 50k and oil cooler lines just a few weeks ago. Van weighs 8500 to 9000 and has since the first week I've had it. Got it new a few years ago.
 
Did it loose some pressure, or all?

Did it loose pressure after sitting overnight, start up on a cold morning?

The oil pump is behind the timing chain, bolted to the front of the engine, direct drive off the crank. When worn, they drain back, loose prime, won't pick up cold oil.

If it lost all pressure while running, the pump may have broke, or the pick up tube came loose. The pump can be changed without dropping the pan, but takes very nimble fingers to get the pick up tube bolt out.

If pressure dropped, probably not the pump.
 
I agree to double check the oil filter. The only new vehicle I've ever owned (or ever [i:de6dadeb2a]will [/i:de6dadeb2a]own!)was my 1986 Dodge Ram 50, built by Mitsubishi. I had an oil filter that disintegrated. Bits and pieces went through the engine without my knowledge and ruined the engine. Unfortunately, next time around I had the oil changed at a Jiffy Lube (I was in the USAF at the time) and they had already thrown the filter in with thousands of other filters, THEN decided to tell me about the problem!

Point of the story is, oil filters "can" go bad.
 

That is INTERESTING, considering the 6.0 does NOT use an oil pump drive shaft!

As Steve wrote, they are crankshaft driven!

Hope yours doesn't look like the bottom photo!

If it has some pressure, but is lower than normal, and the lifters are noisey, I'm guessing something is causing internal pressure loss. That kind of pressure should still keep the lifters up unless they have lost oil completely.

Don't those have plastic lifter guide trays? Seems I've heard of them breaking, letting a lifter turn. Not sure if that would cause oil pressure loss.

The bottom end of those engines are known to be tough, shouldn't be loose at that mileage unless something unusual has happened.
 
Change your oil filter first. Easy and cheap.

I have a 2008 with the 5.3. Different motor but similar. I bought it with a bad lifter on one of the active fuel management cylinders. I changed cam, lifters, etc deleting all the afm stuff. I didn't change oil right away. I was going to put a couple hundred miles on it and then change to let anything that may have gotten in the motor get cleaned out.

It had crappy oil pressure. Maybe 7 at idle hot and 20 going down the highway. Not low enough to set off the warning light, but it did throw a code for oil pressure. I was sure I was going to have to go back in and do rod, main, and cam bearings. Only 100k miles but 15,000 hrs of run time on the truck.

I was talking to mechanic buddy about it and he loaned me his oil pressure setup to double check the dash gauge. It goes on in place of oil filter. Lo and behold, without the oil filter on the pressure went to 20 at idle and 35 to 40 at 16-1800. I put another filter on it, and it's been the same ever since. For what it's worth, it was a Delco filter that was causing the problem.
 
We had a company pickup, 2002 2500HD, 6.0, 370,000 miles on the odometer. The o-ring on the oil pickup tube was old and brittle. When it was cold it had low oil pressure-noisy lifters. We changed the o-ring while chasing some other oil leaks and it seemed to cure the problem. Ron
 
I have a 93 with a 5.0 Usually with mine when the oil starts getting old the pressure will drop and when really old the pressure will bounce up and down. It's interesting about the oil filter. Recently the pressure has been running really low and goes to 0 at traffic lights. I can't remember if it started at the last oil change or not. I'm using a Fram filter.

I did not know they made a adapter for that I made a extension for my pressure gauge take the sender out and fight the extension in. Its a job I don't look forward too Looks like another hundred dollar bill will go toward the cause.
 

About right . That is the mileage when the oil pump failed on my 6.0 . Installed a GM high volume pump, timing chain and new harmonic balancer .
Eventually the crank sensor and cam sensor will fail after 15 years of heat, oil and vibration.
 

I declared it white Wednesday got one coming along with the 06 up adapter, a 3" down pipe, turbo rebuild kit and Bellowed up pipes for my truck...
