Black Saturday, last trip to the vet (very long)

Guess I'm writing this just to try and help me deal with our loss. Last Saturday morning we took Gigi for her last rip to the vet. Vet was very understanding and really made it as easy as it could possibly be.

16 years ago first of December we drove from Oklahoma to Maryland to get Gigi when she was 9 weeks old. We had previously made a trip to the east coast and stopped by an old friend for a visit. He and his wife had just picked up a rescue Papillon female from the pound and my wife fell in love with her. Unbeknown to all of us at the time the new rescue was pregnant. My friend found out when he took her to his vet to get her fixed.

When my wife heard the news she said I want one of the puppies and I'm going to Maryland weather you go or not. Of course me being me I thought.. That's crazy driving 3000 miles round trip to pick up a dang dog. My friend had told her she could have first choice so that December off to Maryland we went.

We get to my friends house and found 4 puppies, the one that was colored and marked like the Mom was a male and we really didn't want a male. The other three were female and all black. We kinda figured the Dad was black and breed unknown. We later came to the conclusion he was also much larger than the Mom. Mom was an 8 pound dog and Gigi turned out to be 27 pounds when fully grown.

Anyway, Pat (my wife) sits down in the pen where the puppies were and almost immediately Gigi crawls on her and starts chewing on the rings Pat always wears on her fingers. That was it Gigi was our dog from that day on. We went to pets-mart and bought her a collar, leash and miscellaneous supplys for the trip back. Next morning we picked her up and headed back to Oklahoma.

Gigi's first car ride was a 1500 mile trip sitting on Pat's lap in the front seat of our Caravan. At the time my business involved allot of traveling and usually had Pat and the dog with me. Gigi loved to go anywhere if it involved a ride in a car. I would load her up just to go out and check the mail and of course she had to go anytime either one of us were going anywhere when we weren't going to be out of the car for any length of time. Every person in every drive through around here knew that little black dog. She would talk to them while we were picking up food or going to the bank. Bank always gave he a treat and we thinking that is what she was asking for at all the other drive through s.

When she was not quite a year old we made a trip up into Canada and visited Niagara Falls. Found a little park above the falls where we could let her out and go for a little walk. Was walking along the bank of the Niagara river with Gigi on the leash and the little sh!& jumps in the river. Sure glad I had her on a leash or she would have been a goner. If you have ever been on the river above the falls you know how swift that water runs. No way would she have been able to swim in that current. That is when we discovered she loved water and came to the conclusion her Dad may have been part black lab.

She loved to go the lake and collect rocks. I think she got it from Pat. Pat has always looked for and picked up any rocks that were unique. Gigi must have picked up on pat's rock collecting. She would dive in the lake, pick up a rocks from the bottom of the lake, take it to shore and put in a pile.

For the last 16 years she has been our kid, Pat never had children and my daughter was grown, married and living on the west coast. Now we are discovering just how much of our day centered around our dog. Every day functions that trigger emotions are getting easier to deal with but still miss her. She would lay by the bathroom door when either one of us was in the shower. Pat is still working and she knew when it was time for Pat to be home, feeding time, treat time and in her later years pill time. If it didn't happen, she would remind me by scratching on my pant leg, hey it's time for my pill or whatever it was time for.

Picture is from one of our many trips, chair in a motel room. We could leave her in the room when we had a business meeting. Tell her to be quiet and good till we got back, she wouldn't bark or do anything that would attract motel management. She was just about the perfect travel companion.

I could go on and on about the unique things she would do and how well behaved she was but this is long enough already. Rest in Piece Gigi, you were loved and returned our love ten fold.

BobReeves,

That's one of the nicest write=ups I have read. Sorry for your loss. I, too, had to put a good dog down, that experience is defining.

D.

Nice story but sad, it will take time to heal your sorrow, we was without a dog for quite a
few years, then my wife decided we needed a dog, I was against it at first, but thought oh
well what the heck, in about a week she has this little rescue dog, I cannot tell a lie, he is
so much fun to have around. Anyway sorry for your loss, didnt mean to tell you about my
story, my point is how they become a member of our family.

I'm sorry it was time to say good-bye to Gigi. I know your loss, have always had animals as part of the family. Maybe one day it would help to find an older dog who needs another chance for a good home. I've seen many dogs rescued from neglect and loneliness and they really turned their lives around. Just a thought. Right now I know you are missing Gigi.

Sorry for your loss. Be glad you had such a wonderful dog in your life. Dogs come and dogs go , BUT REALLY GOOD ones are few and far between ! You had a REALLY GOOD one ! One like that will be extremely hard to replace if you decide to try.

I too lost a dog this spring we had for around that long. Ours was named Patches and was mostly or part blue heeler. She was an outside dog and as such never got as much attention as she deserved. But her job was patrolling around the property and keeping the riff raff out which she did very well.

So sorry for the loss of your friend. Most of us have gone through the pain of loosing a pet. Keep in mind you gave Gigi the best care and a good home. Some where there is another dog waiting for a forever home. Stan

Thanks Gang...

Boy first day home alone, Pat went to work today. Pretty amazing how many emotional triggers have surfaced. Coming in from the shop for lunch was really hard, she was always laying in front of the door waiting to go for her mid day walk. After that she would lay down beside my chair while I ate waiting for her bite of whatever it was I was having for lunch.

Vet just called, her ashes are ready to be picked up. That was quick, vet made all the arrangements. We decided to have her cremated. Not sure I could have dealt with digging a hole. Will go in tomorrow AM, traffic coming back out of town is horrible this time of day.

That's a real fine story about your friend and companion. My ten year old arthritic best pal is
getting in the short rows and I am dreading that day. If he goes first I intend to also have him
cremated and his ashes placed in my niche of the columbarium I had built for my and my son's ashes
at the local cemetery. If you don't mind, what was the cost of the cremation? TDF

So sorry for your loss of a family member. We are going to be faced with the same thing before too long. Our dog is getting along in years but she has sure been a joy to us and a lot of company to the wife when I was working away a lot before I retired.

What a beautiful pup!, So, so sorry for your loss, they truly become part of our home and heart!

Was 150.00 for the deed and 30 to have a plaque engraved for the box. They went by how much the dog weighs, Gig just fit in the second tier at 22 pounds. First tier cutoff was 21 pounds and believe it was 130.00.

Sorry for your loss.

I had to make that last trip a few years ago. Hardest thing I've ever had to do.

May she rest in peace. You gave her a good life.

I'm sorry you had to loose one of the good ones.

We had to put down our setter a few years ago and my kids still talk about her regularly. She'd been with my wife and I more years than my kids are old. So they'd never known life without her. I still miss her as well. Even when you get another one they always hold a place in your heart.

Sorry for your loss.
It never gets any easier.
Been there many times myself.
