i got a letter friday hesston massey ferguson dealer in juda wi is closing his doors on dec 1 he has sold out to another m-f kubota in durand il.
where when will this end if ever fewer dealers farther apart.
i think the buyer now has 4 or 5 different dealerships

Small retailers have a hard time. Just like small grocery stores, the little dealer has a hard time competing against the big guys. Size matters.

A long time White dealer here closed earlier this year. The area Case mega dealer is consolidating two locations. Two JD organizations merged early this year and who knows what the ownership is thinking. The dealer over in Fairport, NY is longer a NH dealer and at one time had a huge business with Ford backhoes. I think that regardless of the color or dealer organization things are always looked at if business can be done with less overhead i.e. less locations. In some ways this is not new and I recall as a kid one JD dealer buying another out with the intent of closing that location. It is just a cost of doing business. My forecast for around this area is on average there will be one location of a given color every 50 miles apart in the next 20-30 years. Might be a little better for Deere as they have to patronize lawn and garden customers who are not that flexible. Good thing I am not that far from Rochester and the more well to do "burbs."

Been lucky here so far. We lost our good old White/Oliver Agco dealer a few years ago because the owner passed away and there was a larger dealer in a better location nearby, but a new location of a dealer that already had two locations opened up even closer to home in an old Home Depot location. So far they've been real good to me.

There are fewer farms to service, so fewer dealers are needed to service them. It's the natural progression of things. A dealer is not going to keep their doors open just for your convenience if they are not making money. Somehow farmers manage to keep going year after year losing money but the rest of the world has to make a profit to keep the lights on.
