OH My Gosh!

Word has gotten out that I have sold out. There has been a steady stream of locals coming in to see what they could buy or get for free.

I've had Fathers try to undercut their sons and vice-versa, neighbors talking bad about other neighbors hoping that I will sell equipment to them.

What is it with these people that I have known for over 20 years? I was always under the impression that they cared about each other but, what I have seen today is the exact opposite. Neighbors/family members bad mouthing each to be able to buy get something.

I've had neighbors get mad at me because I let another neighbor have something.

It's a mad house and the bad thing is that I am just now seeing the true colors of my neighbors.

"I am just now seeing the true colors of my neighbors"

Well, at least you are not dealing with this immediately after a family member has died!

Unfortunately, things like that can bring out the very worst in people.

We're seeing that today - all the shoppers doing the fighting and screaming at the malls.

Sorry to hear of your eye opening experiences. What you are witnessing is the nature of men trying to get a good deal or something for nothing. They don't seem to realize that you worked long and hard for your possessions and they have true value to you and your family. When they start bad mouthing one another stop them in their tracks and tell them that such talk does not become them and you don't need to hear it, you expect a fair price because I still have a family to support. Then the ball is in their park. You may lose a few customers, but it may be more peaceful.

They can still be your friends. You have seen their true colors, but that should not destroy the friendship. Mark Twain said," I have not a particle of confidence in a man who hath no unredeemed petty vices". I say that you do not really know a man if you have not discovered his vices; once you discover the vices, do not let it destroy the friendship, but watch them. The Bible, All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God Romans 3:23

Which is why auctions are the name of the game around here. Even estates, the family better be at the sale if they want something. It all goes to the highest bidder.

When my Grand Father died people where talking to our landlords wanting the ground to rent before the funeral. Almost all of them where running me down. What they did not know was the leases had been in my name for years. A couple of GREAT landlords gave me a list of who all had called or stopped by. To this day I make sure those people NEVER get any kind of a deal if I am around them.

In your case be glad your planning to hit the road. You will not have to deal with them much longer. I would stop selling/giving anything away. Call an auctioneer and sell everything your not going to want to keep. Even the crap in the outhouse. LOL

When my Folks passed there were people asking when the land auction was gonna be. Mostly fueled by the gossiping family that lives next to me. They were telling people we couldn't afford to buy my siblings out. Had to buy them out in 2012, we had saved money and tightened down. It's now paid for hate to be a disappointment to them.

A few days ago I saw an ad that my renter of 15 years had his place for sale. Came home and said to my better half...I wonder how soon our neighbor...XXX will come by asking to rent our 300 acres. (She knows, no way in hell we"ll rent to him-they tried it before) Next day we see that another has called, left no msg. Today, at the welding shop- he is there. Asked me about renting 80 acres that is next to his. I said I won"t split the farm. Of courser, rumors are flying about why my renter is advertising.

I'm not surprised as you never really know a person until you live with them or you get involved with them financially then their true character comes out.Rich, poor in the middle all people
are the same just the size of things they fight over are different.

When I was 16 my Dad was 47 and needed a heart valve transplant. My uncle aunt and a cousin farmed right next door. They didn't come over at all to see if we needed an extra hand with any chores. Word got back to us later they were telling people we were going to have to sell the cows and they were figuring out how they were going to buy us out. We still milk they sold out in 2002. Just a few months ago we went to dinner with neighbor "friends" that grow potatoes. I offered to drive a truck a few days for them hauling during digging after corn just to lend a hand and thought I might enjoy it and had intentions to do it for free as a friend. Word soon got out we can't pay our bills and I was looking for outside work to support the farm.

I?ve had similiar discussions about this. I?ve had to explain to a family member why it?s rude. On the flip side, a woman I know lost her husband and by not discussing equipment with her and just expressing condolences, I didn?t learn she was stressed about dealing with it and called a scrapper and gave away everything to anyone. She didn?t realize the value of it all as she didn?t run the farm.

I heard that the neighbor was going to sell. It never went to market. He took an offer and I was the bigger loser for not having moved on the info I had heard.

My neighbor rented my farm for 21 yrs. I wanted more rent back in 012,he wouldnt give it so I rented to someone else that would pay it. Neighbor now is pizzd at me.

His loss,my gain.

Yep same round here, my dads retiring and guys want to rent the land. One guy that won't speak to us in the store turned up about 3 pm one Saturday. he got out the truck and starts asking how things are, while i'm working on a tractor. I just said good you didn't come here to ask how we were, what do you want!!!!!!. Then out comes "well I don't like to be the first asking" but can I rent the land. you should of seen his face when asked what he wanted, and when he was told well you are the 6th guy wanting to rent, and 3 more want first refusal to buy L.O.L.

If you want to have fun with the guys bidding to buy your stuff just say "you can make offers but I reserve the right to make counter suggestions". They are all trying to steal the stuff because they think you got to sell it quick and cheap. I had that happen with my pull tractor when i moved from England to Canada. Guys bid me less than scrap price for the ton of weights on it to run in 3500 and 4500 KG classes. They said you can't take that tractor with you. I counter suggested and loaded it in a part full container of tractors and stuff I had comming over, it sits here in the yard now !. It was half way to Canada and guys still phoned trying to get it the day before I got on the plane. If they had bid 2500 they would of owned it.
Regards Robert

My father and I farmed separately but worked together until he died. After his death my mother tried to farm for a few years but tired of it and decided to sell. I had let my leases go to help her as I had a full time factory job. I couldn't pay what the farm was worth so when it got out she was selling the community got talking. It wasn't long before a cousin let it slip that people were saying that I had lost the farm though I never saw the books to this day and all business was carried on on my mothers name. The buyer owned the farm behind so we could sever the buildings. A cousin went to the council meeting for the severance and objected. I also found out that my charge account privileges were cancelled at 2 local feed mills I had dealt with for 20 years due to people believing rumours.
