School referendum today.
They want 16 million.
Since I've been here - 10 years - the had referendums for a new fire house and police station, a new library, and two city owned liquor stores. They got them all built. Fancy buildings, all of them.
The signs were in the yards of late: "Vote Yes - It's for the kids".
Well, I do like kids but I voted no.

I always vote against all tax issues. It's the only time I get to directly vote regarding taxes.

Besides, they will simply put it back on the ballot at an unusual and inconvenient time as a special election such that the employees of the board in question can carry the day.

Dean

Yes, my wife and I voted today. One Gov candidate won't raise taxes the other sez probably need to raise taxes. So it's a no brainier.

It is the same jazz here. Last year there was a vote about a new super dupper fire house/ emt building even though there are three already in existence. Was HANDS down voted NO !!!!! Guess what they just finished building two weeks ago? They said we need it and went right ahead and built it. Mayor had an r by his name and, said he was going to retire anyway so ,go build it. Everytime I go pay the quarterly taxes I have to look at this on the wall. If anyone tells me it is for the kids I want to punch their lights out. How in the world can they blow so much money?? MHO

(quoted from post at 16:35:40 11/07/17) How in the world can they blow so much money??

Simple -- for every dollar they spend, a portion goes in other pockets.

I've always hated when people would try to get something accomplished by claiming it was "fir the children", or some other unfortunate group. Anyone who speaks out against them is just plain rotten to the core. Yet those that "play along" are almost considered as heroes....especially by the others whose pockets are getting lined.

That "for the kids" stuff is crap. Budgets here have gotten voted down a lot lately. Only thing we lost was after school bussing rencently. All that means is we pick up our 14 year old daughter at school after work. Not a big deal ! She is involved in drama club ect after school. Between the two of us we can figure it out ! They always threaten stuff for kids, have been doing it since I graduated in 93.

Yep. I always vote against all tax increases, no matter. These jokers cannot be rewarded for their mismanagement. The Bible says we are to tithe 10% of our earnings to the church. If 10% is good enough for God, it is good enough for the government.

I used to live in Illinois that has a lottery. The people of Illinois backed legalizing the lottery because they were told that profits from the lottery would go to financing education. OK, they got the lottery but none of the profits went to schools because another law allows their government to "re-appropriate" funding elsewhere and that's exactly what their state government did, "re-appropriate" the funds to everywhere BUT the schools. I can't count the number of times while I lived there that bills came up to "fund education" or police and fire or highways or something that the voters were told that if they didn't vote for that schools, police and fire stations and highways would be shutdown, so the voters always did and do it, and every time the funds get "re-appropriated" elsewhere. Happens every time and WE never learn, nationwide.

Mark, I may be wrong, but I think what those rascals did was use the lottery money for schools, but pulled all of the money that had previously gone to the schools before the lottery was approved. We (the voters) were led to believe that all of the lottery money would go to the schools, but never thought about them (the potlickers) snatching the regular appropriation away. When we (the voters) raised cain, they (the potlickers) told us that they were doing exactly what they promised - but they neglected to say that it wouldn't benefit the schools even a nickel. It was a shell game for sure. I voted against the lottery, although I have bought two lottery tickets in my lifetime.

After re-reading your post, I think you and I are saying the same thing, but I misunderstood you.

I voted No to ours. Yes the kids need schools but the last one they built is like a palace. No way do they need a building that rivals nnalert Tower.

Iowa put the lottery money to the schools, then took the budget back, so no more money than before.

Not to be negative...

But it won't matter. Once the "idea camel" gets it's head through the tent door - there seems to be no stopping it! At least not around here...

We go and vote no - and as another poster replied, they'll just bring it up again next year. If that gets voted down, they'll bring it up the following year OR spend 10-15K to hire special promoters to convince people it should be done. (Yep - that's all been done around here.)

Seems they just keep on and keep on, until they get their way... worse than an old, nagging wife. LOL!

Always the same. Here in Arizona, we voted down the MLK holiday in a popular election, said we had enough holidays already. The next year the legislature created the holiday in spite of us--and the worst part was that nobody squawked.

Here in Southern Ind , neighboring CLARK Co has a referendum to rebuild their schools ,,. its has been a lively ugly campaign
of stretched truthes , horror stories , and growing pains,,.all caused by enempt managers ,,. My harrison Co Property Tax Bill is funding our schools over 75%. The lions share has been that way for 50 yrs or more .And Difficult to change .
sadly It SEEMS To MOST all Govm't does is spend other peoples money... i served 12 yrs in my county council and commissioner ,,..Everyone there ALWAYS tried their level best to wisely move forward or hold back if need to for spending to get the Best Bang for the BUCK . What always "got my goat" was when we had to tear out and rebuild something that was 20 yrs old because of new FEDERAL regulations ,,. Failure to do so could get our County in a lawsuit. There Were many like that .Copy mavhines ,i inherited a County internet server that was a shameful Boon Doggle of confusion when , i 1st joined the Commissioner Board . We Fixed That money sink hole.
Another one was bridge load weights ,.every 2 yrs all bridge structures have to be evaluated for safe weight passage... That "Seems like a very good idea ",But after the I-35 Bridge failure in Minnesota,. most all the firms that do bridge studies risk insurance got reevaluated by the insurance companies. They must have really put the fear in them Good Too ... consequently every 5 x 8 ft concrete culvert that we were crossing semis and log trucks for 50 years ,overnite were not safe for a school bus to cross./ Common Sense WENT OUT THE WINDOW The Bridge firms simply put 2 ton limits on all of them .. Now ,with the culvert tagged 2 tons ,,if such a bridge failed it would be on the county risk if someone got hurt ., We had no choice but to rebuild those bridge culverts ,.,Most were built rite after WW 2and were built STRONG . and had another 50 yrsof service left in most peoples opinion...But?! CONCRETE DOES AGE and fail over time According to engineers studies .To complement those findings , the roads needed widened anyway . so just as well do it all in one pulling job.. However , I will Always Believe We spent a lot of money to avoid the fear of getting sued should one culvert fail and hurt someone .

Seems every time a referendum gets voted down around here life goes on....go figure! The waste in government is unbelievable!

SweetFeet - you have it figured out!

They can keep bringing it up for a vote until the public get apathetic, but once it passes, you're stuck with it. They won't let you bring it up for a vote again. Wait a minute - we voted no 5 times, over and over again, but we vote yes once and it's over???

This stuff makes my blood boil.

I admire you for being able to laugh about it.

PJH,

Wellllll, truth be told... I also find it very aggravating!

BUT I just try to do my part to turn the tide - then, though unsuccessful... try to let it ride, knowing I did my part. Otherwise, I'd probably be howling like a steam whistle ALL the time. :)

AND the alternative to laughing, is crying. And I don't care to do that.

About thirty years ago Texas decided to hold a Constitutional Convention to replace our Constitution as it is a product of the Reconstruction Era. They jawed around for a month and could not agree on anything. Ever since then I have voted against every ammendment to the old/current constitution. And will continue to do so.

Yup, look like we'll be paying higher taxes. Might be a good time to sell your place and move up to your farm in Pa.

When the first try for a new school came up, it was voted down, and again the next year. Finally the concerned citizens committee got behind it and helped with the plan and the publicity, and it passed. BUT, they removed a lot of frills compared to the first try, and I believe that we got a good school for our money.

Looks like it failed to pass.
1508 yea to 1602 nay.
Good!
But as some of you have said, they will just keep trying till it does pass.

Same thing here back in Sept. They wanted 19 million for a new high school, the newest school in the district! Superintendent went to all the school pitching the idea, and I made my voice heard. The school he was in was built in 1919, with expansions and improvements over all the years, but the oldest. Heck my great gramps helped built it. The referendum was voted down by a huge margin, and the "Vote Yes" committee is under investigation for trying to buy votes, with all thing, a catfish sandwich!

In Tx. they spin the yarn that the state has all these millions available and will match the school districts investment 1-1. Mommies get out with their emotions and all "it's for the kids" and no way can you compete with that. Obviously anything of the kind passes. Will give them this, the things they build aren't "too" elaborate for country schools in a small community.

ut.......once upon a time, Allen had a one room school house....now a $60 million football stadium.........someday Frognot will have one too!

Yepper. At the rate this place is currently exploding may be as early as next year. On the stadium's effects, does the team play any better? Grin

(quoted from post at 13:32:25 11/08/17) Someone took a thumping in Virginia!

You mean the blue seat getting a new blue occupant? Not unexpected, if you've been paying attention. The press will tout this a major defeat for the Administration, but it's not. They of course fail to mention the four red House seats that stayed red.

That's because anyone that squawked would be shouted down as a racist.
