I saw one of these for sale near me and am wondering about the pros and cons. It is diesel. I have a 4010 & 4020 so know and like green. But
have heard the 3010's were not so great. Thanks

I think the 2510 was a real sleeper to begin with because people thought it was a revamped 2010. It is not. You can't compare it to a 2010, or a 3010. Great little tractor. The big difference between it and the 3010 is the engine. Lots of options for repair/replacement of the engine.

Nothing wrong with a 3010 or a 3020. Most folks who don't like them were disappointed in the power in comparison to the 4010 and 4020. A 3010 is not a 4010. Wasn't intended to be. If you stick with what John Deere claims the 3010 is capable of, it is very capable and long lasting.

I have had a 3010 for at least 10 years and it has been a great tractor. I have at least a dozen tractors and the 3010 is the go to tractor. If I could find a 2510 for a good price I would snatch it up. They seem to be gaining value.

You will not be disappointed if you buy a 2510. It is a better tractor than a 3010. The pto is much improved and the engine is much more responsive. Nothing wrong with a 3010 (I have a 3010 engine in my 3020 that we mix feed with every day). The 3010 used a heavy balancer assembly that makes them a little dead in throttle response. The only downside to a 2510 is that many still have the 4 piston hyd pump. If it works great but it is not something you want to spend money on. When it goes bad get a 3020 or 4020 hyd pump with 8 pistons to replace it. There are also lots of other engine options for a 2510 such as the 219,239 and even 276. We have a 219 in our 2510. Tom

Only better then a 2510 is a 2520! I've had a 2520 since I bought it new in 1970. It's bigger than a 3010 and a whole lot more tractor. I have spent several days on it this past week choppping stalks. A 2510 is a bit older, and a bit smaller, but the tractor is still a good model and one of the best handling tractors JD ever built......

It has been mostly said here. My handle says where I stand.

A 2510 is not a 2010 or a 3010. It's a peppy tractor with its own attitude. The 2520 is even peppier (is that a word?). Many people point at the 4 piston pump as a negative, I believe it depends on what you do with it. And of course, if you find the pump lacking you can upgrade easily.

I started collecting these tractors when I realized they were a real sweat spot in the 50-60+ PTO hp range benefitting from all that JD learned from the 10 and early 20 series that went before them. Remember, the 2510 did not come out until 1966. Green Magazine has had several articles on them over the years.

If you want to use it like as a 40x0, then get a 40x0. If you want a peppy tractor to handle 50-60+ PTO hp jobs, you will love it.

Obviously, all tractors this age are subject to the care and maintenance they received through their life. Be prepared to evaluate it carefully. Maybe you know something about the prior owner.

Have fun.

Paul
