Still got trouble //Perkins 354

Just not satisfied with the fuel return dribble drop . when i open the fuel return line and operate the hand pump i get fuel thru easily with each stroke.. then when all tite and engine running Nothing but a drop dribble come through the return nipple while idling ,. this is my 4th injector pump. each time , every single one broke the ROTOR ... i learned from others that the fuel return is stopped up somewhere .not sure if i have a problem , but it seems that this motor is not cured yet . ever so often at idle the engine will stutter /stammer and puff smoke..i need some ideas,. thanks for your thoughts.

If I recall the combine engines use TWO constant filter bleed fittings, lines then go to the top of two injector return banjo bolts. Tractor applications usually have just one bleed orifice. Remove the line on each one, work the hand primer and make sure the small orifice is open, not plugged. If both are open, but you have little or no return fuel back to the tank then there's a SUPPLY problem/restriction. Ran into that awhile back on the neighbor's White 2-85 when his engine operated supply pump died. There must be more fuel supplied TO the injection pump than engine needs to run, excess is used to lubricate and cool the pump. A correct working system will have at least a pencil lead stream back to the tank, and usually more than that. Also if NAPA/WIX filters are used MAKE SURE the filter top OUTER groove does NOT have an O ring in it, that's the filter inlet. These filters flow a bit different than the original 7111-296 and 796 filters do. I've lost count how many service calls made to correct that common mistake..

Hi We had problems with our 750 with a 372 this year, It would run fine for 5 mins or less under load then flat out fall on it's butt . It would appear there was plenty of fuel when it was bled, but as DT said we found a supply problem by accident. Dad pumped the primer real hard for a bit longer than bleeding it and the fuel stopped coming. We checked the filter on the suction line in the tank, as we'd had a problem there before years ago.

There was a couple bits of wheat whiskers stuck in the filter but not enough to hurt flow. We found part of the issue was whiskers up in the check/ non return valve on the primer pump intake port. We blew that out and checked the screen in the lift pump but found nothing there, then blew the tank feed to the lift pump back . There was a heck of a bang and stuff shot out the line at the tank end, so that was part plugged to. It ran fine for the rest of harvest. so maybe that could be doing something similar to
Regards Robert

Sure sounds like my Massey 165 with Perkins diesel when my neighbor put the wrong o ring in one of the filters. There was 2 supplied with the new one and he put the one that fit inside the filter. Make sure you use the one that fits inside the groove in the filter housing, not inside the filter, it shuts off the fuel. It sure caused me a lot of time and money before I finally found the problem, thanks to Dieseltech. Just my thoughts, Keith
